I got some waterstones vouchers for my birthday and, to state the obvious, want to buy some books so recommend me some modern stuff. Has anyone read the new Pynchon, Inherent Vice? I love hard-boiled detective stories and i like Pynchon (downgraded after getting bored halfway through Against The Day).

Also just finished re-reading Child Of God and i'm about to start The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco.

Bristol - Uk

Gigs - almost all gigs happen at `the junction` which is a punk dive and has randomly great or terrible sound. Everyone from Fucked up to Uk Subs and all in between. Small and punk friendly. The Croft also on the same streetis more upmarket and professional. Hardskin and Brutal Truth are the last couple of gigs i`ve been to there. Other DIY venues, The Queens head in Easton, White Hart in Redfield, Thekla (a boat) sometimes has decent stuff but after recent buy out seems to prefer promoting next to nothing of interest. The Cooler on Park St. does some alright stuff. Gallhammer and more stone doomy stuff. The Denim and Leather promoters seem to run things there.

Avoid - The Fleece, crappy high stage, dead expensive and usually rubbish bands. Same goes for the huge Carling Academy.

Record Shops. Pretty dire after the closure of Replay records. However there`s The Croft bar which runs a record shop during the day located on Stokes Croft. There is also Plastic Wax on Gloucester Road which is a huge 2nd hand shop with stacks of vinyl. If you spend several hours in there you could turn any number of bargains up. I picked up the old swedish comp. `Vargra for helvete` for £1
Besides this there are some shops like repsycho also on Glos. Rd which is occasionally worth a look. Bristol is seriously rubbish for record fiends.

Food wise - check out Cafe Kino on Stokes Croft which is a veggie / vegan co-operatively run place which is probably the best for vegans in town. Also opens late on a night. Bristol has a massive selection of veggie / vegan eateries, from Falafel king stall on the waterfront to Matraiya in easton which is up market veggie restaurant. There are tonnes of health food shops dotted around the city like Harvest, Wild Oats, Southville Deli, Royce Rolls deli etc seriously easy to be vegan in Bristol. There`s also the bog standard wagamama`s. Curry houses galore and if yuo like Thai / asian food Dragon Express does MSG laced takeaways which are hard to beat. There fake everything on the menu.

If you`re an anracho activist check out the Kebele cafe / info shop in Easton. Where all therevolutionaries reside. You can`t miss it, huge murals onthe side of it. Open mostthe time and does cheap vegan breakfasts on a weekend, bike workshops, solidarity groups and such like.

Drinking Holes - venues is where i tend to end up. The junction has a bad rep. for its booze, people nip round the corner to The Bell which is a nice place to hang out. Most pubs in the centre are expensive and best avoided. The Plough in Easton is very popular with lefty types and has very late drinking. The Easton Cowboys / Cowgirls football, cricket, netball etc teams are in full effect here and they are always off touring mexico and other crazy places forming solidarity groups or setting up the Alternative World Cup. Other than that i`m lost as i don`t drink enough to be informed on the subject.

Drugs - bristol is awash with everything you could wish for and if you don`t like that kind thing you just don`t have to indulge but most people seem to enjoy it.

What is wrong with these bands? They suck so much but I find it hard to describe why.

There is something terrible about both, and it's very similar in each case. I think it's the fact that they don't write actual songs and that the majority of their psuedo-songs end with some weird cadence with no resolution.

Anyone else want to muse on why they're so awful, and why it is that (sub)humans like them?

C'mon, this is fucking hilarious:

http://pogocafe.wordpress.com/2010/03/0 … /#comments

Get a cup of tea, take ten minutes out of your day and laugh your head off at the best idiotic internet comments since youtube. My personal favourite is this gem:

"It’s inspiring to see people resolving their differences with the direct action principles and tactics they’ve learned through activism. I hope everyone was properly masked up while carrying out the daring raid to retrieve the bodies of their fallen comrades.
However, the People need to be vigilant now more then ever, with an eye to history. In situations like these, the deposed junta will almost invariably abscond to another country (or café, as the case may be). They’ll take with them the contents of the treasury and attempt to consolidate a new power base. Swift action must be taken to head this off. Although there’s a risk of becoming more like the obviously life abhorring despots that you’ve supplanted, the only way to safeguard the revolution is to bring them and their collaborators back behind the café and stick ‘em up against the wall. Make the slope down Clarence Mews slippery with their blood. Displays of strength and power are all these thugs will ever understand."

Random / obscure 90s emo bands

Am attempting to start a thread where people post oop emo records of cool bands. I'm mostly interested in shouty stuff but post other stuff if you want. Maybe we can discuss it too! The emoisdead archive has helped me find loads of stuff I had not heard of. There still seems to be a lot of other stuff not in this archive and I am obsessive compulsive trying to discover as much as possible. Having things in one place is really useful too rather than the occasional thread hidden away on the band section of collective. Even if it's just okay or completely generic I'd like to hear it. So if you have any stuff you think people might not have heard of or see some cool blog posts please post them in here. Thanks!

I'll start it off - found this upload randomly - Your Majesty and Rugtip. REALLY solid stuff and whilst it's got typical influences to some extent both bands seem to have a bit of originality and do their own thing.

http://strangledplanet.blogspot.com/200 … cords.html

P.S. I see Andy has made comments on the blog post!
