Topic: Budapest

anyone got any tips for this fine city? I am going there in a couple of weeks for a few days, and would be much obliged for any tips, info and suggestions for things to see, places to eat and places to record shop.

Re: Budapest

Why don't you ask guys from Human Error since they're from Budapest...

Re: Budapest

incredible city.

- take a bath, everybody does it but it really is worth it
- go wander around budapest market and get some langos (deep friend bread). it's a hungarian speciality
- szimpla is quite a nice place to have a drink. it's a converted warehouse and it's a bit of a backpacker hole but it's still really great and they serve good food as well. there's also a place somewhere around there which is a similar sort of vibe but with more locals, wish i could remember what it's called
- i've heard there are quite a few interesting museums there including one on the secret police from when budapest was under communist rule. didn't make it there because of lack of time but you could maybe check that out

- if you go up to buda don't take the cable car. the walk is nice and not difficult
- there's a street which is horrible. it's full of restaurants and people trying to drag you in for food/drink. i have no idea where it is but you'll know if you're on it. get out of there quick. it's awful and they rip you off.

hope this is some sort of use

Re: Budapest

Definitely spend the afternoon having baths at Gellert. Lovely place.

Re: Budapest

The secret police museum is called the terror house it is on Andrassy uct, it is the main street in budapest, very very good museum, the end of it is incredible. Great place to eat called vater or vata as long as your a carnivore.
If it is really cold get hot whisky at cafe negro in the main square...very nice.
Jewish quater/ cathedral in main square are quite cool if you like that sort of thing as is the view from the roof of the cathedral.

Love this city so much

this place was interesting but depressing.  as you say, a great museum, but the end with the cells and the gallows was incredibley bleak and depressing. also, I thought the gift shop selling miniature busts of Stalin was more than a little innapropriate!

Budapest was a great city though. had an ace time. cheers for all the tips!

Re: Budapest

I am myself going next week-end, and will keep in mind some suggestion.

But also, what good historical landmarks/buildings or churches are worth seeing?

Re: Budapest

Parliment and the Royal Palace are worth a look. Both very impressive, and close enough to walk between.

The Christmas market is on too and that's pretty fun. mulled wine and these huge cylindrical pancake type things were ace.

The tour of the hospital/nuclear bunker was pretty cool.

The Statue Park is worth visiting as well. all the old communist era statues were taken from the city and put together in a park out of town. you can get a direct bus there from the city centre, but it only goes once a day at 11am.

Re: Budapest

Yeah, turns out I'm not going anymore. For some reasons train tickets to go outside of Poland increase of price like with planes. It sucks.

i assume you're talking about the cable car that goes up castle hill. if so i totally agree with this. didn't go on it cos it was closed for maintainance but, having walked up instead it was quite obvious that it would have been a rip-off.

things i would recommend:

- the terror haza on andrassy utca
- the national museum (think its on karoly utca)
- walking down andrassy utca in general as it has some really nice buildings (including the opera house) and at the end of it is heroes square
- going to the opera house for a concert as it is well cheap and their philharmonic orchestra is pretty tight.
- the synagogue (try and get the tour as well - its pretty informative)

for food i'd recommend an all you can eat place on kiraly utca called, i think, trofea grill. cost depends on the night you go but at most it's 4999 forints per person. my girlfriend and i discovered it moreorless by acccident but its really great food and all your drinks are included in the price too.
that and a place called bohemtanya if i remember its name right. the food was really nice there and the service was good as well. can't remember the name of the road it's on but it runs inbetween kiraly and andrassy utca. if anyone actually wants to know i can find out as i'm doing this from memory and some names are probably...

...tis all in peeces, all cohaerence gone...
