Topic: OUYA - independent games console even xleox can get behind

Thought this would be of interest to even people who don't play video games.

The console costs $99 and at least some aspect of every game has to be free, like say a free demo that you can pay to unlock the full content of.
Every single OUYA is a development kit and comes with the SDK. No licenses are required and its built on Android 4.0 so there are already plenty of people who know how to program for it. Anyone can make and publish a game on it, no licensing, retail or publishing fees.
It's also being encouraged for hackers to try and see what else the console can do, hacking it will not void the warranty, so essentially it's opening it up to the entire community to see what can be done with the hardware.

Interestingly it's raised $3.1 million of its $950k goal with 28 days to go.

What do you punks reckon? I'm sold on the idea already.

It really does interest me, just to the point whereby I can have an open source media centre/emulator hub without having to dick around connecting up a pc and using various bits of software to redefine inputs.

I've slowly fallen in love with Android since getting my S2, it's amazing how much great stuff people create for it. Someone's even ported the AGS engine to it meaning I can play through Resonance again  on my Nexus 7 (when it finally fucking arrives).

Shit like this always amazes me

Re: OUYA - independent games console even xleox can get behind

eh??

I can't get behind something I can't understand... sorry!

this kind of reminds me of something some pals of mine who went to K-town fest this year were still laughing at when they got back. Hoepfully they'll spread some light on some band making shout outs to all the hackers or something.... guess you had to be there huh?

you still bore me...

in that it's entirely open source and open to DIY modifications and anyone can make and publish software for it. With 100% artistic freedom.

Sounds interesting but let's face it, the state of open-source/Linux gaming is absolutely dire at the moment. Plus Android is pretty bobbins for gaming too as it's written in Java ... who writes games in Java? Anyone coming out of a game programming degree will be working in C/C++/Assembler so won't be wanting to reskill in a slow language like Java.

It looks a bit gimmicky and hobbyist for me and I can't see it providing an experience like X-Box. I'd love to be proven wrong though.
