Topic: Where should I start with Jawbreaker?

There's only 4 albums I know but it seems to take me ages to get into emo'y albums.

What's a good starting album with Jawbreaker?

Re: Where should I start with Jawbreaker?

any of them except bivouac.

unfun is a bit rough and ready, couple of songs are almost rites of spring-y.
24 hour revenge therapy is a quality melodic punk album.
dear you is probably the most accessible and well written but loses a little of the roughness that makes the other records so good.

i never could get into bivouac, it has shit production (something that dogged them really until dear you, but it adds to unfun, and doesn't spoil 24hr).

jawbreaker is not really an emo band, although the lyrics are probably why they are considered so.

Re: Where should I start with Jawbreaker?

I would start from the start with Unfun (the CD version with extra 7" songs) and go from there, bearing in mind that it is the most roughly produced stuff. For me that's no bad thing really. And I might well be quoting fourfa.com here but it has an awesome 'minor-key edge' that some of the other stuff lacks.

With the more slick Dear You, I tend to just listen to these 2 amazing, more downbeat songs:

We're going to party, karamu, fiesta, forever.

Re: Where should I start with Jawbreaker?

start and finish with 24 Hour Revenge Therapy = my two cents

Re: Where should I start with Jawbreaker?

24 Hour Revenge Therapy is the place to start. A perfect punk album start to end.

I remember when Dear You came out and I hated it. Sounded too polished and Blakes vocals at the time just weren't "Jawbreaker-y" enough. Seems weird thinking back on that now. It soon became one of my favourite records of all time though.

Don't write off Bivouac! Chesterfield King is one of the best songs Blake ever wrote!! In fact the whole album is great... Just very different to the melodic punk most people associate with the band.

Unfun is great fun and sloppy as hell, but I probably listen to it less than the other 3 albums.

Re: Where should I start with Jawbreaker?

I agree with you guys here, 24 hour is the record. Also Chesterfield king 12" works well.

Re: Where should I start with Jawbreaker?

24 hour is the records BUT bivouac is incredibly good!

it is very very catchy but the songs are a bit buried. the sound is a bit grungy and hides the poppiness

Re: Where should I start with Jawbreaker?

24 hour and dear you are my favorites. also never really got into bivouac.. i really love chesterfield king though

guess i will try again!

Re: Where should I start with Jawbreaker?

i also found the cd tracklisting of Bivouac to mess it up a bit. lp works much better.

Re: Where should I start with Jawbreaker?

bivouac is being repressed along with the chesterfield king 12" so maybe it will sound better? they are both on my xmas list

cold beer in my mouth and tears in my eyes

Re: Where should I start with Jawbreaker?

Chesterfield King 12" and then go to UNfun

Re: Where should I start with Jawbreaker?

as a huge Jawbreaker fan, I have never got the appeal of Unfun.

Start with 24 Hour Revenge Therapy for sure

Re: Where should I start with Jawbreaker?

Bivouac was the first album I heard by them and is still my favourite. 24 Hour Revenge Therapy coming in a close second. Unfun and Dear You in equal palce.

Re: Where should I start with Jawbreaker?

Possibly controversial, but I say Etc is the best to start with. Pick whatever album corresponds with whatever songs sound best. it's completely solid in its own right too, and I think the 24hr revenge therapy reject song would have been the best on that album. Plus it contains my favourite jawbreaker song!

Major Wants : To The Point "mentally checked out' 7"
the Death Dust Extractor 12" & Crisis 7"s at punk prices...
and I do a weird record label http://tadpolerecords.blogspot.co.uk/

Re: Where should I start with Jawbreaker?

To be honest I don't think it matters where you start. Eventually you'll want to get everything Jawbreaker did. Every record has a couple of not-so-good songs, but for the most part every record is superb. Blake's lyrics, at times, are some of the best in punk rock. If you really need a starting point check out the song 'Condition Oakland' and go from there.

Re: Where should I start with Jawbreaker?

guy from Fracture David Stuart did a compilation tape of their best stuff for me years ago. really good but confuses me now when i try and listen to full albums

You're not punk, and I'm telling everyone.
Save your breath, I never was one.
You don't know what I'm all about.
Like killing cops and reading Kerouac.

My enemies are all too familiar.
They're the ones who used to call me friend.
I'm coloring outside your guidelines.
I was passing out when you were passing our your rules.
One. Two. Three. Four.
Who's punk what's the score?

Got a friend. Her name is Boxcar.
Cigarettes and beer in El Sob.
Her hair was blue, now it's green.
I like her mind. She hates the scene.

Re: Where should I start with Jawbreaker?

I started with Dear You, the production is much thicker and his vocals are less gruff. 24 Hour Revenge Therapy is 100% solid too, Ashtray Monument going into Condition Oakland is a standout. One of those two records will sort you out fine for getting into them and you'll definitely reach a point where you like the merits of both.

Bivouac is patchy to say the least and the different track listings throw off the pace so much, although the title track is perfect and possibly my favourite Jawbreaker song.

Re: Where should I start with Jawbreaker?

Started with 24 and Dear You. In my opinion, regardless of sound, they've got most of the great Jawbreaker songs on them.

Re: Where should I start with Jawbreaker?

funny how these threads work, because i'm super into bivouac right now smile

Re: Where should I start with Jawbreaker?

Scandinavian Jawbreaker LP is a good place to start
