Topic: SCAB EATER (Australia) / FRAU / MIDNIGHT PARASITE / THE SWELL - London
STATIC SHOCK GIG VOL #118
A half Australian, half American act based out of Melbourne.
A merciless and unforgiving touring machine who manage to effortlessly blend the classic stomp of 80's Boston HC/70's UK Oi! with elements of crust and d-beat from around the world. Placing heavy emphasis on the need for genuinely catchy hooks and rhythms, the band delivers a consistent and solid sound, despite drawing on a diverse range of (punk-related) influences. On stage the precision heard on record is instantly traded in for a frantic, aggressive and furious physical performance matched by few of their contemporaries. This is HC for the whole punk family, not just the meatheads. SCAB EATER is raw, frustrated,
heavy, over-the-top, dark, decisive, brash, fucking rockin' tough hardcore that is extremely fun for everyone except the band themselves. Go see 'em.
MRR review of their latest 7” EP, Mind Trench: “SCAB EATER is a mostly Australian, partially American band based out of Melbourne. They have carved out a bit of a reputation(including an interview in MRR #389) due to their insane touring schedule, necessitated in part by their American singer's need to get out of the country at least every three months to renew his visa. It's a band that plays a lot, making any space they set foot into their zone, including the studio. This record can both rip and rage. The title track drops some grooves that wouldn't be too far out of
place in a NO STATIK set, then rotate it out for a slam-worthy
Boston-esque hook. There's only one legit breakdown on the record, which I respect. They don't oversell it. Lyrically this covers a lot of worthwhile ground, paralleling the refugee crisis in Europe with Australia's; linking fascism and religious intolerance in Greece, the US and Australia; even covering indigenous displacement by the Australian mining industry. Tracks like 'Lines Drawn In Blood' have something -rythym- that a lot of
hardcore bands don't really fuck with. This is Australia after all, and much like their compatriots Prag or Oily Boys they throw at least a splash of chorus on the guitar. Again, it's pretty tasteful. They even get away with dropping a bunch of pinch harmonics on one track. Don’t ask me how.”
Still naturally hostile.
