Topic: The Melvins

I've checked and couldn't find a dedicated Melvins thread, and I feel there really should be one. So here it is. I can' think of another band that has performed so consistently over such a long period of time (21 years!). On a simple scale of Shit/Middling/Good/Amazo/Godhead it runs like this for me

Gluey Porch Treatment - Good
Ozma - Amazo
Bullhead - Godhead
Eggnog - Good/Amazo
Lysol - Good
Houdini - Amazo
Prick - Middling
Stoner Witch - Middling
Stag - Good/Amazo
Honky - Good
The Maggot - Amazo
The Bottlicker - Good
The Crybaby - Middling
Electroretard - Middling/Good
Hostile Ambient Takeover - Middling
26 Songs - Good
Pigs Of The Roman Empire - Good/Amazo
Never Breathe What You Can't See - Middling/Shit
Sieg Howdy - Shit
Mangled Demos - Good
(A) Senile Animal - Amazo

The Melvins, a certified 'Fucking Great Band'.

Long May They Run!

Unbelievable. And very brave.

Lysol would make amazo by my reckoning.

Who's your favourite Melvins bassist?

using gay to describe some novelty christmas cards is just so fucking ignorant

I'll let that one stand as it is well titterable

Loses points for being mostly covers (arbitary, I know, but whatever) Though 'With Teeth' is one of my favourite Melvins songs

I'd like to say Rutmanis, but the correct answer is Mark D.

Unbelievable. And very brave.

Preston, shooooorley?!?!?

evry since i can remember i've been poppin' my collar,
poppin', poppin' my collar, poppin', poppin' my collar.

Re: The Melvins

Am I right in saying that the only records Preston is actually on is Lysol, his solo record and the Night Goat 7"? Not much of a contribution and musically, for me money, Mark D brought the most to the table. Plus he is well short, and thus funny.

Unbelievable. And very brave.

Re: The Melvins

I think you are being a little harsh on the Jello Biafra stuff. I know it's not as good as the rest, but they are better than a lot of other musics out there.

Listening to Bullhead right now.

Re: The Melvins

I'll stand by what I've said. The music is fine, if a bit boring. But the lyrics? Really? y.e.e.e.e.e.e.s.h.

Unbelievable. And very brave.

Re: The Melvins

I thought JP was on more than that. Who played bass on Eggnog?

Re: The Melvins

I fink it was Lorax, but I may be wrong.

Unbelievable. And very brave.

Re: The Melvins

Good Thread.

I have a lovely Kozik screened Melvins poster in my sitting room.

Re: The Melvins

Agreed on the Preston point, love Lysol though I do, he's more of a footnote than a chapter compared to Mark D or Lorax (who, of course, has the best surname/family lineage of the others).

Rutmanis is a bit of a dude; he drools and is too much of a wastoid to remain employed for too long.

Current line-up is pretty heavenly, and A Senile Animal was my fave 'rocking' Melvins LP.

using gay to describe some novelty christmas cards is just so fucking ignorant

Re: The Melvins

Rutmanis' best work was in the Cows. That was some real hot shit (in places).

(A) Senile Animal improves with every listen, like a fine cheese. Or something.

Unbelievable. And very brave.

Re: The Melvins

Getting a bit quantity over quality these days it seems release-wise. Are the mangled demos really that good?
I didn't realise Joe Preston was on so few melvins records, but despite that, his solo EP is fucking GREAT

Re: The Melvins

No mention of,
Colossus OfDestiny
Alive At The Fucker Club
Your Choice Live Series?

Please read and share oureoin.com ,thank you.

Re: The Melvins

Cant see how Stoner Witch is only Middling, i love that album! Even though Bullhead, Lysol and Houdini.

I probably like Mark D's bass playing best and my fave Melvins track is probably 'The Bit', the best thing on Stag by a mile.

Re: The Melvins

joe preston gets the win on account of the salad dvd and having the biggest name on the back of lysol.
best covers band ever.
goodnight

Re: The Melvins

New album forthcoming, looking forward to it.

Ozma is my current album of choice, and I've recently developed a deeper appreciation of 'The Bottlicker'. Very Alice Cooper sounding in places.

Unbelievable. And very brave.

Re: The Melvins

Question: how did the Melvins instrumental track from Gluey Porch (can't recall the title right now) end up on Infest 1987 demos fanclub LP? I thought it was Infest covering it for awhile, but it's actually the same recording session...

Re: The Melvins

Really?!

Unbelievable. And very brave.

Re: The Melvins

Actually I think it's not off Gluey Porch, but the demo tracks tagged onto the CD version or something. I'll investigate later

Re: The Melvins

new album "Nude With Boots" out june 16th.
listened to it a couple of times and it's pretty cool and rocking so far.

Re: The Melvins

new albums slays. good chance it'll be the melvins/big business double up tour again this year.

Re: The Melvins

But will they curate the Christmas ATP?

Unbelievable. And very brave.

Re: The Melvins

I hope not. I'd want to go and its cunt soup.

Re: The Melvins

gluey porch is all - played that every day for about 18 months, never quite recovered or followed later records much

1st 7" is a banger too

fuck off
