Topic: board games

recommend me good board games, people!

it's been decided that there's to be a board gaming evening at our house every two weeks, stuff like murder mystery is always appreciated!

Russian roulette

Re: board games

I played CRANIUM the other night. It was okay!

not that many of them have had a bat.

Re: board games

whatever you do, stay well clear of "perplexcity". the most singularly rubbish game i've ever had the misfortune to play.

Re: board games

Risk is superior to all other board games. Star Wars Risk however is pretty crap.

Re: board games

Risk.

Re: board games

cool, i'm going home next weekend and gonna raid the cupboard for all my old board games. i seriously haven't played any board games, 'cept monopoly, since i was a whippersnapper, so don't have a clue, aside from the obvious ones.

ones which incorporate getting physically involved/active and maybe rowdy would be good, too.

dungeons and dragons has been thought of.  danger.

Re: board games

ok, here are the UNDERGROUND DIY GAMES! you can get a lot of these from: http://www.iguk.co.uk

Fearsome Floors : http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/7805

the premise: each player has 3 or 4 characters that they are attempting to get to escape from a dungeon. in the dungeon are 1 or 2 monsters, that each turn move closer to characters in the dungeon, based on what card the monster draws. nobody is in charge of the monster, you just draw the card and see where it goes. this game moves fast and is a lot of fun. it can take up to 7 players. it is chaotic with lots of players. if you paly with 2 monsters at once, everybody dies. sweet.

Settlers of Catan : http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/13

ian already linked this. it is a great intro to UNDERGROUND DIY GAMES. it is the fugazi of UNDERGROUND DIY GAMES. it is for 3 or 4 players. you are on an island, you are trying to build cities. each turn you roll a dice and you get different resources, such as sheep, wood, rock, etc... you use these resources to build roads and cities. you get to trade with your opponents. this means you get to utter the immortal line: "has anyone got wood for sheep?". it plays in about 90 minutes

Through the Desert : http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/503

every turn you place a camel on the board, you are trying to make the longest line of camels and link up water and palm trees. the camels look like sweets. this is a great game for 4 players

Roborally : http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/18

this is great with lots of players (6-8). you are a robot in a factory, and for some reason you have to race round to reach 3 checkpoints. each turn you are given 10 cards, you use 5 of these cards to decide where your robot will go. but you have to decide which 5 before you move, which means you will probably get fucked up, which is where the fun comes in. other robots shoot you if you finish in their line of site. it is crazy. good fun.

Carcassonne : http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/822

this is kind of simple, but surprisingly addictive. good for 3 or 4. and cheap. each turn you choose a face down tile. it will have a city, a road, or a chapel on it. you have to place the tiles down, you get points for completing roads, cities and farms and things. it is very quick and easy to learn.

Manila : http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/15817

this game fucking rules with 3 or 4. it is a gambling game of sorts. you are shipping goods into manila on boats, each turn you have to place one of your workers on the board to earn money in various ways. the boats move up the river based on dice rolls. if you put a worker on a boat and it gets to manila you get money. you can choose to be a pirate, if the boat gets to space 13 you get to kick everyone off the boat and claim all the money yourself. or you can bet that no boats will make it safe to port, which also gets you money, providing it comes off. really fun. takes about an hour.

Category 5 / 6 Nimmt : http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/432

great card game, fairly straight forward. there are 5 rows of cards. each turn you have to place a card in numerical sequence. if you place the 5th card in a row you have to pick up the row of cards, which is bad. good with lots of players.

Citadels : http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/478

fun card game, good with 4 or 5. each turn you choose a character, who helps you mess up your opponents or helps you build your citadel. lots of backstabbing! cheap. takes about an hour.

Incan Gold / Diamant : http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/15512

fun gambling game. you are going into a temple like indiana jones. you decide whether you stay in to get more gems or run away like a pansy. good fun with a large group (at least 4). it is cheap and plays in about 20 minutes.

--

there are loads more, but i think these are the ones that are more fun. there are others that are maybe more serious or go on for ages, but i suspect that might not be what you are after

--

fuck risk. it takes 5 hours and it is just a bunch of dice rolling.
