What a a weekend!Harvey Milk and ASVA alone made the trip over worthwhile as did the following:
Rolo Tomassi being surprisingly amazing on Friday
Watching Rauschen dancing to Dalek
Tormenting Kunal (and Ellie) between bands
Ewan Frater's face. "The Anvil Will Fall". A lethal combination
SWANS' "Half Life" through a big PA
Fucked Up and the scary man from The Process taking over the big venue on Sunday afternoon
crap stuff:
not having any money
completely forgetting there was a cinema showing stuff I wanted to see
not being able to get into see Alexander Tucker or Justice Yeldham
Orthdox
Missing Efterklang

ah yes - I was fairly well-refreshed by that point. What larks ...
This was awesome overall but there were some total let downs!
Best bands; Oxbow, Earth, Oren Ambarchi, Harvey Milk, Dalek, Gravetemple. and Cath and Phil Tyler.
Let downs; Thrones and Fuck Buttons. It's a shame as last time I saw Thrones he was really awesome, he didn't seem very happy this time! Fuck Buttons were quiet and boring.
But fuck me it was the loudest festival I've ever been too. That's what ruined ASVA for me, I'm sure on record they sound great but the fact that it was so loud I couldn't pick out any of the keyboard/synth parts which I expected to be the most exciting parts, same happened with Gravetemple to a point then we went outside and it sounded much better.
Great to seem some friends I've not seen for ages and meet some new ones and came back with some awesome records and a head full of ideas, so gonna get busy in the next couple of weeks.
and I wanted to smack the guy who was shouting "fuck off" every two minutes at the Harvey Milk set, at every band he gave them abuse. I have no idea why he was there, attention seeking arsehole.
and the vegan food was good, Warehouse cafe for the win.

Stephen O'Malley?

haha, nah it was some dick who i've seen at Narcosis gigs a lot before.
oh and Kikuri was a bit of a letdown, Merzbow was awesome and Keiji Haino got really tedious in parts.
Battles were excellent, as were Guapo, Efterklang and Oxbow.
Battles were awful. Not only the worst time i'd seen them but one of the worst things i'd ever seen. Makes me sick to think I missed Harvey Milk for that shit.
Why didn't you go and watch Harvey Milk?
picking Battles over Harvey Milk counts as a poor judgement in my books...saw the first 15 minutes of Battles and it was atrocious.
Over all a fantastic festival, good friends and good music. Oxbow, Earth, Asva, Dalek and Harvey Milk obvious winners.
Battles were awful. Not only the worst time i'd seen them but one of the worst things i'd ever seen. Makes me sick to think I missed Harvey Milk for that shit.
Battles ARE awful. All the time, not just at this. One of the worst live bands ever too.
you really should hang your head in shame for missing the Milk for them.
Harvey Milk and Oxbow were all killer last night in Manchester.
I had a great time. Great to finally see Oxbow as a full band. Harvey Milk who I'd never really heard before were great, I liked that I could hear their encore as I was walking back into Brum town centre. Red Sparrowes, Oren Ambarchi, Asva, Dalek, Kikuri and probably loads more were also highlights.
Lowpoints include - Oxbow being slightly ruined by the exact same boy/girl combo as last year who obviously housed the band one year and felt the need to barge their way to the front and let everyone (including the band) know about it for 2 YEARS IN A ROW. Not only that but the girl wouldn't stop trying to steal my spot and prodding me in the back. Also Gravetemple. Maybe it was the saturation of droning doom on Sunday, but to me it seemed like utterly directionless noise once the drums came in. Attila's vocals were cool and the highly grim segment of loud and ugly chords which started after the first drum bit was excellent, but for the most part a disappointment for me.
Good job on capsule for making it way better in terms of food and record shopping this year round, all in all a fucking great time!
Kunal, did those people in front of us during Harvey Milk piss you off? They wouldn't stop talking!
God yes. That guy that just wandered in front of us with his big head. Very punchable face.
Aside from them there was a refreshing lack of people there just to be seen, if that makes sense
Would people say it was a pretty rock / doom centric lineup this year? Also it would have been cool to have some grind bands play what with Nick Bullen talking about the subject
Some bands I would like to see next year:
Lungfish (on the big stage!)
Harvey Milk (again)
some punk stuff, Iron Lung for example
my band (in a yurt outside the front gate)
Supersonic was awesome!!!!!
Highlights: having massive lols with friends, Oxbow, Earth, Oren Ambarchi, Efterklang, Harvey Milk... oh that Yukio Fujimoto dude was pretty cool (i could hear asva's set whilst he was 'performing'). Earth and Oxbow were mmy favourites.
Letdowns: not being able to go on friday, lack of drugs and money, Battles (usually amazing live but they were soo messy and shite this weekend), fuck buttons (i love them but they were way too quiet. and i'm sick of their set). Kikuri was a bit shit. Fucked Up are shit why do they ahve 3 guitarists they play the same thing oh well. yeah gravetemple was loud but too much like sunn
yeaah next year i'd quite like to see less doom i got a bit bored of it really. why did they have one less stage this year too (the kitchen was so awesome last year). lack of food and price of food.
Yeah i think a bit more variety in tempo would be rad, and a bit less nathan barley bullshit (rolo tomassi, cutting pink with knives, max tundra)
although i didn't see them at supersonic, rolo tomassi really are a cut above the sub-locust/blood brothers hipster nonsense they're lumped in with.
also, supersonic is extremely diverse whilst still having a high quality control. unfortunately i only got to see the saturday of it but going from DJ Rupture on the Friday to Harmonia on the sunday via all manner of strange doom bands and folky weirdo stuff is pretty damn diverse by anyone's standards.
Some bands I would like to see next year:
Iron Lung for example
that's probably the best idea you've ever had. This needs to happen next year. Iron Lung on the Factory stage.

they really are.I didn't expect to like them at all but they were fantastic, surprise of the fest for me really..the recording I wasn't too keen on but some of the (presumably new) stuff they played was utterly bizarre and had more in common with the nastier parts of "Disco Volante" era Mr Bungle or some weird horror soundtrack or something. There was a bit of the Locust/DEP techy bollocks but even that was more interesting than the majority of bands that do it.

that would be truly wonderful
and possibly do-able,I'm pretty sure Iron Lung are hoping to return to the UK in 2009 (and hopefully Ireland this time too)
a little bird told me Nov of this year with a high-profile metal act, but I've yet to hear from Jensen confirming it. would be great/odd if it happened.

i'm with you guys on this. i've always thought the amount of scathing stuff people have said about them was a bit uncalled-for, and the last couple of times i've seen them they've been ridiculously tight. very impressive band, if you ask me.
They've made their old songs faster as well, the new guitarist is actually better as well, he has this whole spanish flamenco thing going on in one of the songs, they've just put a new one up on myspace which is fantastic, think they played it at SS too.
I saw one of their first gigs, them only and me and 3 others watching at the Cricketers Arms, now seen them play Corporation, Supersonic and loads of bigger places, gather they played Download this year too, so pleased for them knowing that they are honest people out to just play their music, nothing else.
