I had a great time.  Great to finally see Oxbow as a full band.  Harvey Milk who I'd never really heard before were great, I liked that I could hear their encore as I was walking back into Brum town centre.  Red Sparrowes, Oren Ambarchi, Asva, Dalek, Kikuri and probably loads more were also highlights.

Lowpoints include - Oxbow being slightly ruined by the exact same boy/girl combo as last year who obviously housed the band one year and felt the need to barge their way to the front and let everyone (including the band) know about it for 2 YEARS IN A ROW. Not only that but the girl wouldn't stop trying to steal my spot and prodding me in the back.  Also Gravetemple.  Maybe it was the saturation of droning doom on Sunday, but to me it seemed like utterly directionless noise once the drums came in.  Attila's vocals were cool and the highly grim segment of loud and ugly chords which started after the first drum bit was excellent, but for the most part a disappointment for me.

Good job on capsule for making it way better in terms of food and record shopping this year round, all in all a fucking great time!

oh god you must have been stood right next to me for oxbow! I've never wanted to hit anyone so much as those two fassies!

Glad it wasn't just me. BFF x

Re: Supersonic 2008

I am still bored so thought I would ask:

Is Keiji Haino any good?

I remember Warwick trying to convince me of his aceness once but I can't get over the idea that he's a really really funny practical joker. His thing at Supersonic was funny as fuck. I can't believe it wasn't meant to be.

Maybe I am looking in the wrong places to find something good by him but I'm turning up nothing and I can't look forever, it's not my job to.

I guess I am saying, if Keiji reads C-zine, maybe he could let me know what he's done that he's most proud of. Or that I might like. Because lots of people I like like him. And I don't. Yet. I feel left out.

Come on Jon.

Re: Supersonic 2008

I'm kinda playing dillettante with Haino, but of the bits I've picked up, totally beg/borrow/steal a copy of 'Live I' by Fushitsusha. Very damaged, dingy off-the-cuff and hungover-sounding psychedelia.

Yes, in my opinion he is amazing.

He has put out so much stuff and not all of it is good, but the good stuff is pretty much incredible. I didn't really fully appreciate the guy until I saw him play solo last year at No Fun Fest, and I was converted. I had heard Fushitsusha before, and liked it, seen him play an ill-fitted duo with Tony Conrad and thought it was average - but there was something about his solo performance which completely blew every preconception I had of him into tiny chunks. There was nothing to hold him back, or compromise how far he could go (which I get the impression is a musical concept that Haino doesn't really give a shit about) and it was truly incredible.

I'm constantly checking out as much stuff as I can of his - the benefit of working in a shop with a well stocked Haino section. Fushitsusha's live 2 is one you should check out, and I think you may like Vajra, his group with Kan Mikami. I heard a solo Haino disc on Tzadik the other day which was just percussion and vocals, and I couldn't work out wether I liked it or not...wasn't really prepared for hearing him through the filter of Zorn, and I expected it to be a bit more visceral. Will have to listen to it again.

Either way, he always looks cool as fuck. Visually, him and Merzbow together in a band is the ultimate odd couple of Japanese experimental.

Re: Supersonic 2008

He looks like someones Nan. Which is kinda cool, I suppose. I was digging his guitar wrangling at Supersonic. Expressive.

They've made their old songs faster as well, the new guitarist is actually better as well, he has this whole spanish flamenco thing going on

they have had the same guitarist ever since the start - apart from three shows last summer where they had a fill-in guitarist due to the regular guitarist breaking his wrist in a football match.

Re: Supersonic 2008

Are you sure? He looked very different?

Re: Supersonic 2008

Re: Supersonic 2008

I think Bolt Thrower should play for a change, maybe PCM can make a guest appearance.
