I met Emlyn Hughes (at the height of his Question of Sport fame) who was signing copies of Match magazine in a newsagents in Boro when I was a bairn.

Re: Celebrities you've seen in the flesh - where and when

I gave Noel Fielding a spliff and had a chat with him once.

For some fucking reason I met Graham Norton doing a book signing in Borders.

and I once saw Justin from Hollyoaks walking down Briggate looking smug.

In his Boro playing days Tony Mowbray came to our school when we were kids to present something to some kid or summat. Cue the whole school goig mental and running out of lessons to see "Mogga". Gary Pallister and Bernie Slaven around the same time were the "major attraction" at a Primary School summer fair once - £2 to have your photo taken with em!

That reminds me, Gary Pallister lived opposite me from '70 till '72, I was only 2 mind when we moved to guis, can't say I remember if I met him (he'd have been about 6 or 7). Bernie Slaven tried it on with my ex when she was 15, he wouldn't have known tho', still, it's a wrong un..........

I have a long list from my london days, BUT meeting Lucio Fulci ranks up there.... Meeting the man who brought us Zombie Flesheaters, The Beyond, Don't Torture a Duckling and all those others, was pretty amazing.

Re: Celebrities you've seen in the flesh - where and when

Got asked in a Beatties toyshop when I was about six if I’d mind if Princess Diana could be served before me. I was buying a piddly little airfix spitfire, while Prince Harry was being treated to a massive warship (no doubt a German model). Needless to say, I had the last laugh.

It was at a horror film all dayer in London in '95, he was the guest of honour. They showed Zombie Flesheaters and his latest film with John (Deerhunter) Savage, which alas was pretty terrible..... He did a Q and A session on stage with an intepreter, and then signed stuff. I was just walking past and happened to give him a big smile and a thumbs up, he smiled and made a small fist, like a champion.... He'd announced that his next film was going to be the ultimate version of Jeckyl and Hyde, but unfortunately he never got to make it, RIP Mr Fulci. Year before they'd had Dario Argento, wish I'd made it to that too.

Used to go to the Midnight Media film fairs (in a leisure centre in Watford!), where they'd have guest signers in a corner, saw Michael Ripper (Hammer horror regular), Michael Berryman (The Hills Have Eyes, Weird Science) and Tom Savini (Horror FX legend). Also Ingrid Pitt (Wicker Man etc) was there, and at a screening of Twins of Evil and Lust for a Vampire at the Barbican, saw her and her other co-stars David Warbeck and Damian Thomas from Twins of Evil. They were all really funny, top night.

Re: Celebrities you've seen in the flesh - where and when

once saw lee from hollyoaks sniffing poppers at hospital radio in leeds. very odd.

kanye west in a shoe shop in london, trying on trainers.

david beckham, on a football pitch (shockingly). i used to really like football when i was about ten and went to see manchester united play a couple of times. before the match my friend and i were being very annoying and shouting at him while he warmed up and eventually he waved and smiled, probably to make us go away.

david dickinson. he was doing a book signing at a book shop in manchester when i lived there. i was in the bookshop at the time. no one was at the signing, it was pretty embarrassing.

stephen from boyzone. i used to work at w.h smith in manchester airport and he bought lucozade from me.  i think david dickinson also came in at some point too, and various footballers i'd never heard of.

Re: Celebrities you've seen in the flesh - where and when

Lots but most are shit...

Making fun of Sugababes v.01 at a service station on the M1.

Brian Blessed, Matt Goss, Lesley Ash (pre pout), Warwick Davies all coming into my work on different occassions, all were totally sound. Blessed even did the  "GOOOOORDONS ALIIIIIIIIVE?" bit after a little persuasion. Graham Coxon came in with his missus and kid and commented on the fact i was playing The Misfits on the stereo, ended up talking about Bob tilton records weirdly enough.
Lenny henry came in too and was an utter doyle, picked up a stack of graphic novels (about 80 quids worth), i saluted his choice of Preacher books and the wanker goes..."Yahh i love Grants work"  then tries to pull the celebrity card and  says "I've only got a tenner, is that ok?". Tosser. I pointed out that we accepted credit cards, he slammed his card down then bowled out in a huff. I win.

I know i've got some more...

Never knew.  I worked there 2004-2007 ish.  Dreadful place.
It was good when we worked there though Ry bringing his straightens in to do his hair in the morning lowered the tone. the costumers where twats though.
Seu Jorge album of Bowie covers playing in the shop....
Customer- Why are you playing this French shit?
Me- I'm sorry sir but its Portuguese

working on information:
Customer:  Hello, i'm looking for a book.
Me: OK, whats the title?
C: I don't know
M: Fine.  Do you know the author?
C: Not really, i think it was Micheal something but i don't know the surname.
M: riiiigght.
C:  Its got a blue cover.
M: *incomprehensible muttering*

This happened with far to high a frequency for it to be overly witty members of the public having a laugh at my expense.  Eventually i had to deal with it by either simply asking them to leave the shop whilst wearing serious face, or walking away from them after saying i'll have a look and then watching to see how long they waited at the information point before wandering off.

I was eventually asked to have a little  "chat" with a manager regarding my treatment of customers and general attitude.  and with the utmost seriousness it was suggested that i should "decide what was more important, my degree projects (i was in the third year of my microbiology degree at the time) or working in the store"  At first i was confused and assumed this was a joke and obviously my degree was more important.  However it rapidly became clear that smug borders manager was in fact suggesting that the priority in my life should be my shit bookstore job.  He found my laughter inappropriate and i quit on the spot.  I find it difficult to describe my loathing for this place adequately.

dont struggle!

This reminds me of the following call I took when I worked in a record shop:

Customer: I'm after a reggae tune, it was in the 'it parade in 1985.
Me: Do you know who it was by or what it was called?
C: Nah but it goes something like (singing) "Oh mah Pauline, oh mah princess, me nah worry..." (etc for about a minute)
Me: Can't help you, sorry. *click*

Getting back on track with the thread, I saw the singer of the Horrors shopping in Camden Sainsbury's yesterday lunchtime wearing a tuxedo and bow tie.

Can you really be sure of the goddamn time of day?
