haha, was he a nice chap?

As far as I can remember he was lovely but he was also very very drunk and had been booed by a less than welcoming atp crowd earlier in the night so was in no mood to dance. Unfortunately thats all we wanted to do.

Re: Celebrities you've seen in the flesh - where and when

carol vorderman and jeremy irons, wife and son - at the ivy restaurant in london about 4 years ago, sitting at seperate tables.  jeremy irons' son is/was hot.

paul weller - served him a couple of times when i worked in selfridges 4 years ago

helena bonham carter - also helped in selfridges

siddig el fadil (also known as alexander siddig, and Siddig El Tahir El Fadil El Siddig El Abderahman El Mohammed Ahmed El Abdel Karim El Mahdi (yes i copied and pasted that because it's epic)) - i SWEAR he came into my concession in selfridges and kept staring at me and i kept wanting to shout, "DOCTOR BASHIR!!" at him

noel gallagher - saw in selfridges when i used to work there, and also in euston station when i used to work there

nicky clarke - selfridges

queen of spain and her four bodyguards - selfridges

some guy from hawkwind - came into my shop and said, "do you have any hawkwind?  i used to be in that band."  plum.

patrick wolf - came into a shop i used to work in.  advised him on cd walkmans.

kelly osbourne - was at some club i worked for with her then-boyfriend.  he kept running around shouting, "I'M ______ (i forget his first name) OSBOURNE!"

jack osbourne - saw him come out of a people carrier with some rent-a-friends outside the mean fiddler while i was flyering outside a secret foo fighters gig.  about 5 years ago.

russell lissack from bloc party - i used to flyer with him in the same places and he came to one of the clubs i worked for one night.  i broke my 'edge' with him and he gave me a little kiss on the head.  he wanted me to go home with him and tried to bribe me with coco pops.  haven't thought about that in ages!  that was about 5 years ago, too.  in fact he was flyering that same foo fighters gig with me. bloc party used to be called the union, and he kept trying to get me to go see his band but i never did.

stephen fry - i was about 8 years old (i think) in king's cross station, just coming back from my summer holiday in scotland.  i thought he was the most massive person i had ever seen ever.  recently i have been thinking about writing him a letter about it because i bloody love stephen fry.

wolf from gladiators - on a train coming home from scotland, maybe a bit younger than the stephen fry sighting.  he was in the same carriage as me.  i really wanted to get his autograph (he had a stack of pictures he was signing for little kids on the train) but i was too scared.  he was also really massive, but in a different way to stephen fry obviously.

he's a massive, massive cunt. he used to live near me and i served him a few times when i worked at mcd's and he was without fail a rude, ignorant prick. he got beaten up in a friend's local for being a gobby twat too.

Re: Celebrities you've seen in the flesh - where and when

I served Carol Vorderman pizza. her daughter is well hot and we totally had a moment. she's like 14/15 though. They live about 5 minutes from my house.

Eddie Large also lives real near by and I used to go to school with his son. Seen him about loads over the years.

Artist Richard Long (only person to be up for the turner prize 4 times, then won it late eighties, hes actually one of Britain's best internationally known living artists) lives just down the road and have been in the village shop countless times when he's been there. See him on his bike all the time and last summer he was learning to drive and practicing to reverse outside my bedroom window.

I met Nick Lindinhurst years ago and got his autograph, it was an extra in some two part drama that apparently featured the ginger kid from harry potter before he had that role. I saw him doing a moon from the top of a big building and I had a line 'sir, sir, mozzys on the roof sir'.

I apparently walked right past 'sid' from skins the other day. then he was pointed out to me a bit later and his girlfriend is well munting.

Princes harrys girlfriend chelsea - had three encounters with her. one time in sainsbury's when she was on the front of all the papers for some reason. she walked in, looked at the paper stand briefly, but not reading any of them. Then she walked passed me in the library two days on the trot, checking me out both times.

Re: Celebrities you've seen in the flesh - where and when

Right, seeing as Thrash said Shane Embry from Napalm Death then i'm gonna start by saying I have met, shaken the hand of and chatted to: Ian Mackaye, Bob Mould, J. Robbins, Ben & Brian from Lucero, Billy Childish (many times), Daniel Higgs (Lungfish), Matt & Tim from Rancid / Op Ivy, Dave Smalley (Dag Nasty / Down By Law), Ray & Porcell (Youth of Today / Shelter), i'll probably remember more...
Also:
Beth Ditto from the Gossip hugged me (very briefly)
When I worked in Music & Video Exchange I served Ian Brown and had a conversation with him about ninja turtles
Marc Almond at a book signing (his teeth are really bad close up)
I see Minty from Eastenders all the time (he lives round the corner from me)
Same for Simon Pegg
I once stood next to Kelly Osborne at a gig (until she passed out (it was during her wasted phase)
Natasha Koplinski (spelling?  Used to read the news, now presents all sorts of rubbish) was in the year below me at school
Saw that Winston from Eastenders (mentioned earlier) opening a shopping centre (it wasn't a very big shopping centre)
Sat opposite the blond guy from Peep Show on the tube once
Often see Mani (Stone Roses / Primal Scream) swaggering through Camden
Saw Graham Coxon in Nero's in Camden once
I sat next to Zack De La Rocha at a Henry Rollins spoken word show (the day after RATM's 1st London gig. Which I was at.  Which maybe also counts as it always makes Kerrang's top 100 gigs)

Can you really be sure of the goddamn time of day?

Russell used to go to my college, and we have a lot of mutual friends. I took the 4am train back from Brighton to London with him and someone else once after a party, it was depressing.

Re: Celebrities you've seen in the flesh - where and when

Jenny Lewis touched me, once.

Re: Celebrities you've seen in the flesh - where and when

rev. horton heat - my friend worked at some club in pittsburgh and some friends and i went to this show, circa '92, i think. the band walked in and the rev looked at me and said, "you the guy with the blow??" being a shy 18 year old version of myself, i quickly shook my head and stared while he sat across from me with this look of disgust on his face.

eddie vedder - 1991. i went to see the red hot chili peppers and smashing pumpkins. some unknown band called pearl jam opened. SP were second and RHCP headlined (just to put the times into perspective...). vedder did his thing, climbing all over the stage and whatnot. afterwards, he was walking through the crowd. i said, "hey, rad show, dude," or something equally stupid. he smiled graciously, laced a sweaty hand on my shoulder and said, "thanks."

billy corgan and james iha - the reason i was at this show was for smashing pumpkins. i was completely hyped on Gish and used to wait for the videos to be played on 120 minutes every sunday. they were sitting beside the stage before their set tuning their guitars. i saw them and was all, "holy shit! billy corgan and jams iha!" they were like, "you know who we are?" and i was all, "yeah! uhm, how was reading fest? i like your record."

andre the giant and jimmy "superfly" snuka - my dad was a small town cop. small town cops don't get paid shit in the states so he would do these security gigs on the side, some of which included wrestling events. he took me with him once and i got to meet andre and jimmy. andre picked me up with one hand and laughed at me. the highlight of my youth? maybe. probably.

regulator_watts - 3 years ago in london. the man is a legend.

Mr Burns: One more thing...You must find the Jade Monkey before the next full moon

Mr Smithers: Yes, sir                         Mr Burns: Then its all falling into place!

Re: Celebrities you've seen in the flesh - where and when

My limited experience with famous people:

Trent Reznor - our band (very humbly) opened for NIN in Hong Kong

Tony Leung (Hong Kong actor in Wong Kar Wai's "In The Mood For Love") - served him on the plane when I was a flight attendant

Esteban Antonio (flamenco guitarist) - interviewed him for a local TV show

Re: Celebrities you've seen in the flesh - where and when

Just remembered
Roy Wood - having his haircut in that Oasis thing in Brmingham about 10 years ago. He was having some big, matted lump cut out and was wearing dark shades indoors at the same time!

"Once upon a time there was a woodrat named poot."

Re: Celebrities you've seen in the flesh - where and when

bill gates - microsoft bonfire about 12 years ago
guy from the BT adverts - skulking about heathrow last year
christina ricci - walked past my hotel in berlin last year
bill nighy - berlin airport on my way home
jack from hollyoaks - outside sheffield uni
bombhead from hollyoaks - watching the carling cup final in sheffield (i asked about his mum)
that really skinny blonde one (nikki?) from big brother - thorpe park last year

Re: Celebrities you've seen in the flesh - where and when

Forgot one of the good ones: a few years ago with my old band waiting in the entrance bit of Enterprise Rehersal Rooms, Bill Bailey walked in and went off to his practice room. Then, shortly after a clearly inebriated Kevin Eldon came in demanding to know "Bill! Where is Bill?!", the people behind the desk looked confused then our bass player piped up with "erm, excuse me, Bill Bailey went down there". And off Eldon stumbled.

Also, Bob, the bass player from Franz Ferdinand, went to school with my boss and regularly comes in our office to use the internet.

And once I made a cup of tea for Katrina of Katrina and the waves.

I too have found myself standing next to Lamacq at a gig. I believe it was Pretty Girls Make Graves at the islington academy. He's quite terrifying looking in the flesh.

Re: Celebrities you've seen in the flesh - where and when

if this one is true then you win the thread!! i watched  all 2 and a half boring fucking hours of Kingdom Of Heaven for the simple reason that he was in it. he is awesome.

Re: Celebrities you've seen in the flesh - where and when

I've met/seen a mixture of complete no marks, all the way to A list stars. Memorable ones being (majority of musicians/artists i've met and spoken to don't count) -

Natalie Portman - Heathrow airport '05. She was checking into the desk next to my dad's one. I was too nervious to go up to her so i asked my dad to get an autograph to which he replied "Natalie who? I don't have time for this - I need to find my passport" really loudly, she clocks us and gives us both a total stink eye. Eventually we go up to her, she has a look of disgust on her like i just pissed in her face, to which she replies "I don't do autgraphs, excuse me".

Chow Yun Fat - outside the MTR in Hong Kong, about 6 years ago, he was filming something.

Patrick Swayze - Outside Planet Hollywood, LA in the mid-90s sometime.

Will Oldham - Superwolf tour, Edinburgh Queens Hall. He was walking around the gig, i just went up to him and said hello. Comepletely forgot to get a picture taken.

George Romero - Edinburgh film festival 06, meet and greet after his q&a.

Charlize Theron - Edinburgh film festival 07, i went to see a film getting shown during her appearence for some press junkit in the same cinema, myself and a friend literally walked into in the corridor outside one of the cinema screens. Stunning in the flesh.

Morrissey - In a pub somewhere in camden, 04?

Tony Benn - met him when he came up to the Scottish Parliament to chat last in March this year, total legend and incredibly kind to everyone. In my previous job there i've met the likes of Lorraine (Growler) Kelly, John Smeaton, Gail Porter, Claire Crogan, Carol Smiley, Michael Portillo, Spud from Trainspotting, and a bunch of others that arn't worth mentioning.

Re: Celebrities you've seen in the flesh - where and when

Colin from Press Gang - saw him in the street in Covent Garden many many years ago.

Guy who played Ben (Travel Tavern staff) in I'm Alan Partridge - sat across from me at an Irvine Welsh book reading.

Bobby Zamora - saw him walking down Gardner Street in Brighton. I was very excited. Philistine non football loving friends didn't know who he was.

Christopher Timothy - at my school Fete. Told my friend an amusing story about how he inadvertently bought his daughter a t-shirt emblazoned with the slogan 'Don't Shit on Your Planet'.

Noah Taylor (of The Life Aquatic, Proposition fame)- technically not mine, but my girlfriend has seen him around Brighton a few times.

Apparently Nick Cave lives aroujd the corner from me - but I've never seen him (Again this doesn't really count).

Gary Linker - played golf for charity I used to work for. was a very nice bloke.

Jeffrey Archer - did event for same charity - was an absolute cock.

Bobby Charlton - won a place on of his summer soccer schools when I was a kid.

Elvis Presley - my brother and I saw a man who could ONLY have been Elvis, having faked his death many years before, and now enjoying the benefits of anonymity by riding the Bluebell Steam Railway on a bank holiday.

Darth Vader - in Gamleys toy shop in Brighton when I was young. got my star wars storybook autographed, but apparently the Force wasn't working too well that day as he wrote all over the text in the book, making both autograph and story illegible.  I queued up again and got him to do it properly.

Re: Celebrities you've seen in the flesh - where and when

I forgot, I see both Dylan Moran and James Yorkston on a regular basis, they live near by and frequent the same deli/cafe place

Re: Celebrities you've seen in the flesh - where and when

This is fucking stupid thread, so much so, I think I'll throw down the age card.

Tosh from The Bill, in Derby one saturday after a trip to Rollersnakes, about 17 years ago.
John Craven - some daft garden show in Liverpool in the days of Saturday Superstore, met him, got his autograph, looks like my dad.

Collared Guy Picciicicicoitioo at a Fugazi gig in Leeds (at the uni) eons ago and gave him one of our flyers for our first ever gig and asked him to read it out on stage, and he did, bless him.

Singer of Verbal Assault, told him they were better than Fugazi (duh) and shook his hand.

Biscuit from the Big Boys - shook his hand and said 'good show', he was very cool.

Pat Jennings - some airport somewhere, I'd no idea who the hell he was/is, but to Sned & Ash this was manna from heaven and eventually became funny even for me who hates football.

Re: Celebrities you've seen in the flesh - where and when

I also sat on an entire tube journey from Uxbridge to Kings Cross with the chick from Harry and Cosh, Cavegirl and Dreamteam.

Re: Celebrities you've seen in the flesh - where and when

Met a few footballers, like Gazza when he was at Rangers. Also met Ally McCoist on a train one night. I was holding a Dead Kennedys video which sparked a conversation about punk. Seems he was a big fan of the Clash, Killing Joke & SLF, but was more into Springsteen at that moment.

Mani from Primal Scream in Nice'n'Sleazy's in Glasgow. Seemed to be a down-to-earth bloke. Shit band, though.

Adam Ant at a book signing. He was my hero when I was about 11. He still doesn't seem "right."
