Re: Good Films?

Requiem for a Dream... hmm.

I thought it was masterly in terms of look and editing (I remember wanting to fuck Paul Ross with a clawhammer after a comment in a review of said movie that said Aranovsky was using 'Guy Ritchie-style' editing techniques).

Ellen Burstyn gets chased by a fridge, drugs and all of the things that we subjugate ourselves to with all fuck us up... the movie doesn't go any deeper than that, for me. I preferred 'Pi' by some distance; I thought it was more cohesive. RFAD was, on the other hand, a lovely bunch of pictures.

meh, i liked pi, but i liked requiem way better, for me it's like what he started in pi but better
erm, but this is just because pi is too much for me, it's like way too much headfuck to even begin contemplating enjoyment. there was generally just way too much going on at one time and was way so concentrated it felt claustrophobic.
but i'm also incredibly shallow in my film tastes, so much of it is to do with aesthetics, style and other such superficial things

oh and bri just took off my bra, pure hotness

The artifice is the most beautiful part, for sure!

Re: Good Films?

I hate Requim For A Dream. It's one of this wanky films that hardcore kids seem to cream their pants over. Like Donnie Darko, another self indulgent piece of shit.

I don't think the two are comparable at all, Donnie Darko tries too hard to be 'clever' just to cover up plot-holes, where as requiem is near perfect.

"Before I give my own review of this book I just want to say that I am a huge harry potter fan, to the extent that I actually have a deathly hallows tattoo on my bottom. I'm also quite ill right now, but I fought against my horrid cold to read this book. "

Re: Good Films?

-Sleuth (two-hander with Michael caine and Laurence Olivier - fucking awesome)

-The Abonimable Dr Phibes (gothic Hammer classic, some classic moments including this but where a guy gets killed by an incredible shrinking party hat)

- Killer Klowns From Outer Space (they drink blood through curly straws! B-movie gold)

-Bladerunner (one of my favourite films ever. Watch it and then read Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?)

-Ma Vie En Rose (incredible cinematography and treatment of subject and character. Knock-out.)

heresy is another word for freedom of thought

Re: Good Films?

Requiem for a dream is good but makes me ill inside.
As does Brazil
It doesn't get much better than the royal tenebaums (awesome soundtrack too)
Unless you count Ghostbusters.
Maybe something old skool
like rear window...?

Re: Good Films?

spellbound is pretty good.  its a documentary following 8 american kids who are trying to get to the national finals of the spelling bee, which is a weird spelling contest thingy they have over there.  it even gets shown live on the sport channels.  more evidence (if needed) that americans are strange..

Re: Good Films?

Spellbound is wicked : "DO.I.SOUND.LIKE.A.MUSICAL.ROBOT?"

Requiem for a Dream is pretty damn fine as well, but I can't beleive nobody has mentioned Jesus' Son with Billy Crudup, Jack Black and Dennis Leary.

That's damn near a perfect movie.

Also, Bad Boy bubby and The Leprechaun series kick ass.

Fucking Amal (or 'Show Me Love' as the English censors made them call it)

Splendid movie! It made me giggle lots... and it's always nice to see same-sex relationships treated in a way that isn't heavy-handed or throwaway.

It doesn't get much better than the royal tenebaums (awesome soundtrack too)

I really, really wanted to love that movie... and it had some supreme moments in it ("oh my God, he's taking off his shoe!"), but it didn't quite gel for me! It does, however, win the award for the best use of Elliott Smith's music in a movie. That bit really got me

I'm not comparing them in any sense other than the fact they nearly all 'hardcore kids' seem to love them. When they are both shit.

Re: Good Films?

Infernal Affairs (made in Hong Kong by the way) is definitely getting remade by Scorsese i think. Actually, everything is getting remade. except Shaolin Soccer (sadly)

The Infernal Affair's trilogy is awesome, and I'm glad to see that the first UK release is a good one. Definately worth getting if you dont have the R3 already.

Hehe, Shaolin Soccer cracks me up! Why would you want it remade though!?!? I dont see how that could possibly be improved in a Western form.

if your not a cock why not give it a shot.

Re: Good Films?

Goodbye Lenin is reeeally good.

I`d go for:
Fearless Vampire Hunters or The Tenant - both Roman Polanski films.

Tremors?With the giant snails?!Ha!

Rosemary's Baby and Chinatown too!  8)
Lost In Translation, Pi maybe?

Re: Good Films?

Unfuckwithable:

Dr Strangelove. The most brutal and effective parody ever constructed with hollywood. Peter Sellers = GOD

Network. If you don't love it, your loss. "I've just run out of bullshit"

Planet of the Apes/Conquest of the Planet of the Apes: The most fully realised films of the series. A simple enough idea that manges to fully explore complex issues like social hieracy, slavery, the power of knowledge (and its supression) the function of organised religon and received traditions in society, the dangers of an industrial military arms complex and the negative effects that policies of expansion and centralisation have on socities in the long run. Those monkeys look total freaking sweet as well.

Annie Hall. Love him or hate him, Mr Allen made the greatest romantic comedy of all time. Has never and will never be beaten.

Fargo. One of the best ensemble performances ever. Why have the Cohen brothers suddenly gone turbo-wank?

Over the Edge. Late 70's film in which the teenagers of a planned community revolt and burn down their school. 'Punk as fuck'

12 Angry Men. 12 men arguing in a room for an hour and a half. Better than you

Dazed and Confused. Do you like to party?

Breakfast Club. Apart from thgat bit where emilo estawhatever gets stoned, starts poncing around like a twat and then breaks a window by screaming. What the FUCK is that bit about?

Festen. Dogme95 produced some fair amount of wank, but they got it right once.

Honourable mentions: Gummo, Short Film About Killing, Rome; Open City, Ed Wood, Mirror, The Player, Grosse Point Blanke, Tron, Empire Strikes Back

Unbelievable. And very brave.

Re: Good Films?

mmm, i was thinking about this last night, actually: i went to see ladykillers, and was suprised at the amount of 'toilet humour' in it - poo jokes, bum jokes, people falling over / getting hit etc... it still looked like a coen brothers' film, just didn't seem to fit right  :?

ooosh!

Re: Good Films?

i second killer clowns from outer space, army of darkness and seven samurai (and of course most of the films that have already been mentioned, also, but those three most of all).

i will include:

the wanderers
weird science
and
combat academy

I like music.

Re: Good Films?

Ok...

In my opinion they are both over-rated tosh.

Better?  smile

Fabulous movie... but I don't think I ever want to watch it again.

Re: Good Films?

21 grams was quite rubbish, overall. it was mildly okay until halfway through, when the story had been told. then they dragged the other four hours out while i could have slept.

I like music.

these are good points, in fact, i do now remember getting a bit fed up and wanting it to finish, i don't think i could be bothered to watch it again

oh, it was me who posted as briony before btw-oops!

Re: Good Films?

25th hour is pretty good.  it was directed by spike lee and had ed norton and that weird bloke who plays weird blokes in it.
