Re: tv shows

been hearing a lot of good about mad men, might download now

Re: tv shows

is anyone else captivated by the fact that Munch from homicide has been transplanted to law & order SUV and also appears in the wire. He also appeared in an episode of the X-Files.  To make matters more confusing he is based on Jay Landsman who Jay Landsman is based on as well, AND who appears in the wire himself.

Re: tv shows

I hated that bit in Homicide where it crossed over with Law and Order. The amount of cameos in Homicide is ridiculous. John Waters was my favourite.

1980s conspiracy thriller with Bob Peck, really fucking good - some of the scripting is a bit maudlin when 'personal relationships' come up but such is the way with every TV series I've came across (I include The Wire in that). The Wiki page is concise and informative:

Re: tv shows

Underbelly is decent.

True story about a Melbourne gang land war.

Dee from Neighbours is in it looking stunning!!!

The second season is a prequel, set in the late 70s, early 80s.  A bit more glossy but still really good.  Thats showing in Oz at the mo.

Worth checking out.

Re: tv shows

Wow Breaking Bad is good. About 3 episodes from the end of series 2. So tightly plotted and amazingly acted, nothing in the script seems out of place or irrelevant. Also Walt is a hero.

for reals.

Re: tv shows

might have to give Homicide a whirl.
Nearly finished reading the Homicide book and am gonna need something Baltimore-related to take its place.

i can't remember if i've mentioned it on here before but Brotherhood is an excellent series.
Really receommend it.
I think it's better than if not just as good as the Sopranos.

Re: tv shows

Another recommendation for The West Wing. Best series ever (though I've only just started on The Wire).

Six Feet Under was also an amazing series and had the best series finale of any TV series I've seen.

Damages isn't bad but each season takes a while to get going.

For a bit of sci-fi Dollhouse started off shit for the first half of the season but got pretty good towards the end.

Madmen and Weeds are both on my radar but not checked out either.

Also fuck the haters - Lost has actually got better and better (since season 2 anyway which was a bit dull).

Steve.

Have you seen The Corner? If not then definitely watch that first. It's just come out on DVD. Homicide was ok... i'd recommend stopping after maybe the third series.

Re: tv shows

Surprised that more people haven't mentioned Breaking Bad, although the second season finale was a huuuuuuge dissapointment. Hopefully they wont try to drag it out too much past a third season.

Nearly finished the second season of Homicide, it does feel a little dated but all the strength of the charcters mean even the duller episodes are still enjoyable.

I need to watch more comedy, anyyyyyyyone?

Re: tv shows

I've just started watching Deadwood. It's incredible. How does a TV show get to say "cunt" so often?

"There is pleasure in the pathless woods, there is rapture in the lonely shore,
There is society where none intrudes,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar;
I love not Man the less, but Nature more."

weird. i just started watching the series yesterday. first episode was a bit slow but the second was rad. not sure about the whole daughter speaking from the grave thing, but yeah - really good!

i've also been rewatching state of play. best bbc tv drama ever? its got to be up there!

Re: tv shows

Watched all of Deadwood. Holy crap it's brilliant. There is a lot of swearing in it but the dialogue is one of the best things i've ever heard, including Harry Potter on audiobook. The fight between The Captain and Dan is one of my favourite things. Ditto the conversation after the meeting they decide to publish the Sheriff's letter in the paper and none of them can work out what's actually happened. 'It means we're nice fucking people and we don't give a fuck who knows'.

Watched State of Play. Really good, brilliant cast, saves me watching the film.

Halfway through Band of Brothers. Not totally convinced. I've never been in a war but I imagine it looks a lot like it does here because the battle scenes are faultless. But the whole thing reeks of the money that's been spent on it.

Re: tv shows

Deadwood is fucking incredible. Probably the best written show I've ever seen. Got season 3 to watch this week.

"There is pleasure in the pathless woods, there is rapture in the lonely shore,

By the deep sea, and music in its roar;
I love not Man the less, but Nature more."

Re: tv shows

Yeah the only problem with it is that there's no ending so season 3 feels a bit like a dry hump. Lovejoy is incredible in it.

Re: tv shows

they were suppose to be making a movie to wrap things up, is that still on the cards? i've only ever seen season 1 but got the boxed set cheap(ish) around christmas.

i love band of brothers, mostly for the 2 or 3 episodes on bastogne (battle of the bulge). those episodes are insane. but it is way too glossy, a la saving private ryan. the follow up series (the pacific) looks even more so. one day someone will get round to making one of the series about the eastern front, as it is way more interesting / important.

Re: tv shows

I don't think the TV movie is happening any more according to interviews and stuff which is a shame. Here's that incredible fight scene:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Blki-DISUis

Yeah the last episode of Band of Brothers i watched was 'Breaking Point' which is the one after the Battle of the Bulge. It's brilliant to watch at a very high volume!

Re: tv shows

I've seen most of season one of deadwood, but I stalled a bit with it. it was clearly good, but just hadn't grabbed me in the same way as other stuff has.
