Nah, I've never found anything even remotely touching it...

that Orphans of Cush album i mentioned is pretty bleak. but also might have you feeling pretty bulletproof.

I for one appreciated this post...its like Mobb Deep meets London Posse with a bit of Dead Prez thrown in for good measure.

Re: Good Hip-hop???

Hi.
could anyone give me any recommendations like the 2nd and 3rd kool g rap & DJ polo albums, ice cube maybe even lords of the underground or something... early 90's gangsta rap type stuff with funk samples. that kind of thing.

Re: Good Hip-hop???

i've been enjoying the new Kyza album a lot recently. that is all.

of those albums i think waterworld is the most depressing, which makes sense since cage was a suicidal PCP head when he made it... record sounds pretty desperate and even sad at points imo.

Group Home - Livin' Proof and A Tear for the Ghetto are both pretty bleak and definately worth checking out along with these...

Kool G Rap & DJ Polo - Anything, really, but Wanted Dead or Alive is probably the best album by them.

Goretex - The Art of Dying

O.C. - Word... Life. Certainly the beats on this one. Most of them are pretty crushing, with no "bangers" or poppy sounding songs to speak of. Probably one of the best Hip Hop albums I've ever heard.

Organised Konfusion - Self-titled

PMD - Business is Business

All pretty gritty and introspective in a totally "this is a life I can't escape" kind of way. Except for Goretex, who is just needlessly inclined to rapping about death etc.

Re: Good Hip-hop???

I don't know if instrumental hip hop is your thing, but I LOVE Flying Lotus and Hudson Mohawke definitely worth checking out.
and pretty much everything Stones Throw have ever put out.

And also Jehst, best british rapper in my opinion.  This is him rapping over accordian, m-m-m-madness.

Baring in mind I don't like hardcore hip hop that much, bar the big names like Jedi Mind Tricks and Wu, everything else is a bit shit really imo.

i've been caning this since you made that post, such a good album! i looked up the producer, buckwild. and it turns out he produced most of the (great) 'stress' LP by organised konfusion and some really good tracks on kool G raps first solo album '4, 5 6'

Organised Konfusion - Self-titled

"I am one who is one with all things, thus the unorthodox I am
The paradox I am, the equinox extending my hand
into dimensions to unlock new doorways
And so the light has revealed to me that there must be more ways
And so I play with rhythms, for something more than a mere game
enabling me to advance in wisdom
Words will exist like vampires
No need for sunlight, from concentrations camps I escape
with my sanity -- in 2010 every man will be
subject to global warming, formless oval
Millions of locusts swarming
Seek and you shall find the deliverer of a rhyme
the intelligent one, utilizing the mind third vision
Surrounded by a three-sided figure, containing the brain
The triggering mechanism from which I strike
sight beyond sight, sound beyond sound
which comes from below the magma, the granite, the ground
The surface will seperate, dispersing harmful ashes
Your optics will not be able to detect
the deadly hypnotical gases
Damn it's hard to breathe!!! But if I got one breath left;
I'll suck wind from the valley of death, here I come
from the slums of earth to center
I reveal myself as a beast within a, unbreakable shell
Walkin through the doorways of Heaven -- or is this Hell?"

Best hip-hop verse ever?

I don't really know anything about contemporary hip hop, but we're doing a Haiti benefit with the local African and Caribbean Network on Friday, and they've got these guys from Edinburgh playing their room: www.myspace.com/nrnxpo

Its definitely up there, that track is timeless perfection of hip-hop as an artform

Watching this again - it just sounds so perfect, that beautiful piano loop which drags behind the chorus...too good. I always wondered why this track wasn't a massive crossover smash, it has all the elements; its catchy, chilled, cocky. Obviously it was huge within hip-hop circles, but never achieved the mainstream success of something like 'I got 5 on it', 'Concrete Schoolyard', even 'Mister Dobberlina'.

you should check out the Orphans of Cush stuff i posted before. Kyza absolutely rips it on that album. the way he constructs rhymes and puts phrases together cant be topped. his own mixtape/album was pretty sick but some of the beats lacked.

Re: Good Hip-hop???

Anyone remember that the 1st Gravediggaz lp was originally called Niggamortis?????

Just get strictly busines by epmd and the blueprint by b.d.p

"Back when I was a teenager, just starting to think for myself, I came up with a very basic formulation. I decided that when anyone says, You're either for us or against us, you HAD to be against them. Because only moral simpletons and outright conniving rogues see, or even claim to see, the world in such preposterously black and white terms."

Re: Good Hip-hop???

What's good? Summer's coming...

I've been listening to The War Report by Capone N Noreaga and it might fit in with the bleak East Coast thing Jack was looking for before... probably already got it though... good album

Thoughts on new Marco Polo? It's grown on me a bit since the first couple of listens.

Anyone heard the Statik Selektah album? Has a couple of good tracks on, although they're mainly due to the guests (Souls of Mischief etc...)

Also really like this song:
