Topic: Story Of Crass book

My girlfriend has got this for me for Crimbo. Just wondering if anyone on here's read it & if they think it's any good. I'm not the biggest Crass fan, though they had their moments, but I think their attitude/philosophy is much more interesting than their music.

Re: Story Of Crass book

i thought this was a decent book, well worth a read! yeah it's more about their politics, actions and personal thoughts on the whole Crass malarky, not so much on their music as such.

Re: Story Of Crass book

see the review of book in dec issue of mrr, such a wasted opportunity

Re: Story Of Crass book

Has anyone registered the publishing royalties?I would but it might be a conflict of interest.

About .01% of this book is interesting

James WPW, I STILL have your copy!

Re: Story Of Crass book

yeah Crass book OK for politics and philosophy side of things. Musically i am not a big fan but like the lyrics etc. I think there were areas which could have been covered better and more photo`s, flyers etc Stuff abotu touring, gigs and the like but it is what it is. Worth a read for sure.

don`t read Shibboleth by Penny Rimbaud. There`s a bit in it about Wanking his dad off! truly fucking weird, i want to go to one of his Spoken Word nights and shout "you wanked your dad off" at him just as he is going into an intellectual rant on anarcho-syndicalism and the right wing.

Re: Story Of Crass book

I thought it was a great read. Some weird stuff, some heavy poltical stuff and some refreshingly down to earth stuff (especially Steve Ignorant) which surprised me. Plenty of pre Crass days which was surreal a times but interesting. Cracking read I thought and as there's not much else on 'em, well worth a look. The bit about pissing everyone off in Iceland by not playing the "hits" amused me.

i thought both books were good.
i still enjoy reading their lyrics instead of just listening to their music.

Re: Story Of Crass book

aside from books  words and actions i think Crass's music was incredible, unique and original. (im sure they got some guitar sound influence from michael karoli of CAN though)

fuck off

Totally backed... I think their music was great, radical, and powerfull too. In ways that just fast and angry stuff often isn't, that's quite an achievement. I think their music totally kept pace with the amazing ammount of words they had to say. They could also capture the beauty and futility of life all in one song (eg Big A Little A), lyrically and musically unique in their day. The production was like nothing else either. Love em or loathe them, as a group, for serious commitment and singular purpose, not to mention inspiration, it's hard to think of anything since that can compare.

I liked this book a lot.

Re: Story Of Crass book

It's a damn good book - if only cos it gives an insight in the social and cultural history of 70's Britain and what wa s going on before [and often contributed to] punk....

They've stolen our world now they run the place

Re: Story Of Crass book

instead of paraphrasing (which I did above) i'll just come out and say what i meant: the book is entirely shit! it's like crass' own literature (inners from lps, rimbauds own writings etc) reused by some journo hack that does not seem to even like the band that much, the tone of the book is therefore quite at odd with subject matter, i was going to write the tone is a bit tabloid but that might be going too far, there's also tons of grammar and typo errors, like each page contains an error making me start thing perhaps i can make a career out of spell checking books and i'm not even english! but absolutely worst of all is that book contains nothing new to fans of crass, i read it thinking what a wasted opportunity: this reads just like a wikipedia bio - complete with stolen pieces of misinformed texts from other places on the internet.

which is basically what the mrr review says as well
