post the good things about birmingham - gigs/foods/shops etc

Re: Birmingham (/West Midlands)

is that really how you spell 'wag(g)on'?

get the obvious out the way:

ignite records: in the oasis centre, run by rich formely of tempest records/speedowax records, up the punx.
polar bear records: still not actually been to this as it's in kings heath but from what i gather deserves a mention, run at least in part by nath, also ex of tempest records
swordfish records: never really been my thing. but it's there, has a 'japanese avant garde' section if that's your bag
birmingham record exchange can bring up a few winners from time to time too, not far from the academy.

most shows seem to be in digbeth these days ('irish quarter' behind selfridges)

places to eat/drink?

Re: Birmingham (/West Midlands)

Cafe Soya, next to the markets/Spar is pretty tasty.  Not too expensive and MASSIVE portions of vietnamese food.  Handy for gigs down in Digbeth also as it's 5/10 mins walk to most of the pubs.  A lot of the pubs in Digbeth are the best in town in terms of getting to have real ale etc.  The Anchor being an obvious choice (behind the coach station.)

Think you've covered it in terms of record shops though.

Really want to go to that gig ^ but we're playing Stourbridge that night so can't I'm afraid.  Can't think of too many other upcominng gems though.  There's the Nathan Bell & Kogumaza one which Nath is putting on at the H&H, and Raya who does 'It's Just Noise' does some good gigs also from time to time.  Think she does them at SOundbar now though which never struck me as being that good a place.

Want to to get 'The Station' in Kings Heath to put gigs on but they seem reluctant to put anything too noisey on....although I'm sure a night of good bar takings would help convince them!

Re: Birmingham (/West Midlands)

my favourite place to drink is sunflower lounge, although now my girlfriend has moved back to manchester i no longer have anyone willing to go there anymore.
favourite place to eat is woktastic sushi bar opposite the yard bird 11 pound all you can eat

this songs on the house, and this ones for you, i don't like the way you're treating me, I WANNA FIGHT.

Re: Birmingham (/West Midlands)

Swordfish is shit, im suprised its actually still going.

Polar Bear is fine if you want to venture out of town, It has a small 2nd hand section too..but new vinyl is a little bit pricey, which seems par the course in record shops these days.

Theres also the Diskery opposite the new Academy...dont think it has a punk section, so its a trawl throught the rock/sale boxes place...  last time i pulled out the Partisans lp in the £3 boxes....has 1000's of 7"s, after a few boxes you lose the will to live tho.

Does Hard To Find records stock things other than dance??....a mate seemed to think so,
never been tho.

Ignite is very much needed in Brum...keep it up Rich.

no. but if youre into it its well worth a look. the stuff instore is only the tip of the iceberg, the full stock is on their website (most of their stuff is stored in a warehouse the other side of town)

my recommendations for watering holes -

the lamplighter - barford street i think? in digbeth anyway, close to the markets. tiny pub owned by a friendly irish man. feels more like someones lounge than a pub. your granddads lounge. great for a quiet ale with mates, never too many people and a really warm, welcoming atmosphere

the yardbird - next to paradise forum. jazz club with regular nights spanning hip hop, funk, jazz, soul.. sometimes free, but not always

the actress & bishop - havent been here much recently but a nice pub, very spacious and i think they still have gigs there, but probably not much anyone on here would be interested in (not since mob rules and crowd control played there over a year ago anyway)

the flapper - old school heads will remember this as the flapper & firkin, the place has taken on a slight indie/trendy air to it under new management but remains very much the same pub. very close to the nia/icc towards ladywood and opposite brindley place, the more popular hardcore shows tend to take place here, as well as regular indie and wierd noisy stuff. usually packed out on weekends

the old moseley arms - a bit further out of town in the balsall heath area, but once inside its hard to believe youre still in the inner city. every sunday is acoustic night upstairs, nice outside area as well

generally south beats north when it comes to green spaces and friendly places to go out that aren't in the centre. kings heath, moseley, selly oak and even cotteridge all have their own little goings on and regular music nights that are well worth a look if youre not too far away (and dont mind yuppies/hippies/folk music). north is rough until you get to sutton (fancy living in perry barr again ricky?)

wagon & horses gig listings - http://www.myspace.com/wagonhorses

facel vega and harbour matinee is on sunday november 21st at the wagon, miss it at your peril.

it's not that bad...but it doesn't really cater for punk/hardcore too much.

their second hand stuff is pretty good though. picked up a few things cheap like talking heads, death, dri, springsteen, superchunk...obviously pretty damn hit and miss though.

...tis all in peeces, all cohaerence gone...

Clyde,I find swordfish a fucking depressing shop now, its so dark in there and really uninviting..not that they seem to care.
Swordfish used to be fantastic until it moved. (early 90's)
..It was the place for your hardcore fix back in the 80's (apart from the bloke downstairs in oasis)
Then when it moved maximum rock n roll got labelled as "shit paper to wipe your arse on" in there...altho the staff didnt change...so why suddenly punk became a shitty stick i dont know.

I wonder how it keeps going cos i dont even see the latest indie releases in there nowadays.
just well overpriced folk/psych reissues.

Yeah, i usually look at the 2nd hand stuff in there..and he seemed to find some old "needless alley" stock about 6 months ago....so i picked some of that up.

Didnt realise it at the time but record shopping in Brum in the mid 80's to early 90's we were fucking spoiled.

hearing stuff like this makes me wish i was born a decade earlier.
i'll bet you went to the mermaid as well. cunt. the idea of likes of heresy, circle jerks, doom, napalm death, government issue, the stupids and countless others playing in a grotty pub in sparkhill seems unreal to me. my bus into town goes past the building, still derelict after fuck knows how many years and 'grand re-opening' attempts. and the roof has been burned quite badly recently. but the shitty mermaid sculpture is still there!

edit - ive also found swordfish to be a bit wack. only really went in there to have a flick through the jazz section and pick up the odd hawkwind LP. there used to be a bit of oi and anarcho a few years back but there isnt anything resembling a "punk" section these days. a lot of the sections are horrendously dated (drum n bass section? why bother), flicking through is eerily reminiscent of browsing a dead persons record collection - and yes i have done this before anyone says anthing

ah, i never really started going into swordfish (or record shops in general) till about 2000...maybe even a little later, so i didn't even know what it used to be like...still, can't really complain at picking up death's "individual thought patterns" for £5 if you're into that sort of thing...

their attitude is quite odd and there a damn funky smell going on in there now though!

keeping it posi: ignition is such a rad little store and rich is getting in some quality stuff at the moment!

I dunno about the cafe itself - it's new I think?  It's in Kings Heath which is where I live.  Polar bear Records is just off the High Street and worth a visit for sure.  (If you find the hare & Hounds pub on the High Street, it's 50 metres down the side road it corners)  Otherwise the area doesn't have much worth visiting - the Station pub is ok for a pint, and there's an ok Oxfam book/record shop 5mins walk down the road in Moseley, worth a punt.  Otherwise not a lot......it's about a 15 min bus ride into Brum central......
