Topic: dimwitted turntable question

hey. i always made do with a crappy aiwa turntable that i got with my system in 1999 because i didn't have any money to get a better one. today i was given a much nicer unit (a 'dual cs 505-2') by my girlfriends uncle as he was never going to use it any more. it works really nice on me headphones, but when i try and get it to play through speakers it is incredibly quiet, i have to turn it up to 40 to hear it that well, and my old one worked fine at 15 or so.

am i missing something? the turntable is quite old and my system is mostly shit, am i always going to have to use the headphones to listen to vinyl on it?

do i need a 'pre-amp' or something? i haven't a clue about stereos.

ta!

Re: dimwitted turntable question

does it get any louder or quieter when you fiddle with the connections to the stereo? could be a loose connection perhaps.

Re: dimwitted turntable question

nah, it stays the same.  :?

Re: dimwitted turntable question

you need an amp that has a specific 'phono' input (it'll say that on the selector knob) for record players (they put out a way quieter signal). you can buy a nice seperate preamp for about £40, more than worth it if its a nice deck smile

Re: dimwitted turntable question

ok, i'll look into picking one up. thanks!

this is what i got given:

£40 outlay is no trouble as all it cost me was a 4 pack of greene king ipa! generous fella.

Re: dimwitted turntable question

I have this turntable. I use the cheapest Pro-Ject pre amp with it and it sounds pretty good. I like.

Re: dimwitted turntable question

cool, thanks smile

I know the guy who brews Greene King.

Re: dimwitted turntable question

i have that one too. i also noticed it's quiet, i just linked it up to my stereo like you. on full blast it is still at a slightly low volume which sucks. it's not really compatible.

people: is it worth keeping this deck and looking into a pre-amp, or getting a new all in one system? (taking into account the cd player on the one i use currently has stopped working, which i hate)

Just buy a system with a phono input on the amp and you'll be sweet or you will need a pre-amp.

Re: dimwitted turntable question

I bought a really cheap pre-amp from Maplin a few years ago.. I don't remember the price but I'm sure it wasn't £40! It's just a little box.

Re: dimwitted turntable question

yep, you can get them for less, i think the maplin one was £15 or so. i guess you get a little better quality for the money.

Re: dimwitted turntable question

Andy, you need a Phono/Aux converter, it's a little box with a switch on it. It costs about a fiver.

I had the same problem.

Re: dimwitted turntable question

yeha i spent like £300 on my deck so i thought id better get a nice preamp smile

I

live in greene king town about 5 minutes from the brewery.

And this topic is really useful, both record players in our house broke, one started

smoking and the other one is fine but the stack that its part of started sparking inside. When i connected up the turntable with my stereo it was super quiet

so i thought it was incompatible and was getting my girlfriend to buy me a turtable for christmas, now all i need from her is a little £5 box

Re: dimwitted turntable question

On the subject of record players, how often should you replace your stylus (and when do you

know?) ...and where the bugger would you get them?

I've had my record player for about 4 years I think and I've never replaced the stylus.
