Any good suggestions for "atmospheric" BM encouraged! I'm enjoying Summoning/Urfaust/Cold World etc a fair bit lately

Definitely check out the bands I posted above.  The first Lantlos album is worth a listen, atmospheric with a bit of a post rock vibe.  Ash Borer are a good new band playing this kind of stuff as well.

anything that mixes BM with a bit of punk or similar. Any suggestions?

my automatic suggestion for black metal/punk is always Ildjarn as i think they are the originators of raw punk meets stripped down black metal. this doesn't always go down well though as they aren't the easiest of listens, but forest poetry is a masterpiece.

Bone Awl is another classic recommendation.

got a tape by a band called Hinterlands which is very good punkish black metal and Willing Feet from canada do this style well too.

Re: Black Metal

sorry, I know this is a bit of an obvious point but the one-upmanship of who can record themselves worst does get a bit wearing.

Ildjarn are really good but yes, kind of agony to listen to - and not in a good way.

Re: Black Metal

I don't quite understand that, find Ildjarn agonising to listen to in the best kind of way.

Yes, that Hinterlands tape is awesome.

Also, Rife from Newcastle are really great raw stuff: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_zQ7GjBRI0

Heard about these dudes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5prpJMrWhs ?

I'm going to try to stay as civil as I can in this thread.

Samuel, you may want to listen to this: http://www.discogs.com/Vemod-Vinterilde … se/3102787 asap. I think it's in my top 10 of 2011. Think mid-era Burzum mixed with Paysage d'Hiver. Awesome.

More power to me.

Of course, but i think they are very different to Ildjarn, so then it comes down to what should be considered 'raw punk' and 'stripped down black metal' and everyone will have a different opinion, so lets leave it eh?

And yes, the Vemod tape is excellent, as was the split with Klage. It reminds me of Jammerskrik but with shorter songs.

Re: Black Metal

Vemod and Jammerskrik share members though...

Ah, that'll do it then! Did you pick up any of the other Fossbrenna Creations that came out recently? I have the Askeregn tape on the way, but thats all.

I'll get on this when I can find the songs. Hadn't heard Paysage d'Hiver before. Spot on! And wikipedia says he is in Darkspace which kinda fits, haaah.

Re: Black Metal

Not familiar with the last few bands, but as Dominic says, the descriptions are more than enticing.

One of my favourites of the past few months has been Lascowiec (great recommendation from Sam R, please come forward with more stuff like this, dude). I like everything I've heard. 'Gunshots ring out over vinland streets' and 'Gesamtkunstwerk' which are both excellent and good for starters, are collected on this release http://dunkelheit616.blogspot.com/2009/ … -2008.html  Not punky, but it's raw in a really atmospheric and sad way.

Re: Black Metal

I have that Vemod tape Oli, will bring it over. Seriously good stuff.

Lascowiec are so good, just a shame they're dodgy with it.

Re: Black Metal

Didn't realise they were dodgy, that sucks, I suppose it's just another to add to the pile of bands I must refuse to believe exist as humans. Really wanted the 'Gesamtkunstwerk' title to be a purely artistic one, but did fear it probably also held all the Wagnerian political connotations as well.

Another worthy mention that came out a couple of months ago was the Woddrea Mylenstede tape, on Legion Blotan (simultaneous mark of excellent quality and non-dodgy politics). Have been listening to this tape a lot and it's excellent.

Re: Black Metal

Regarding Lascowiec or whatever it's spelled, it's mostly because the bands they rip off (Polish ones and ESPECIALLY the Blazebirth Hall ones from Russia) are dodgy in the first place.

More power to me.

Re: Black Metal

Can't get enough of Lascowiec, i always thought the last 4 'bonus' tracks on Asgard Mysteries and 'Gunshots...' demo were exceptionally great. Oli and Sam, check out Angkor Vat, its pre-Lascowiec and just as good i reckon.

Re: Black Metal

Maybe they were into the whole Cambodian group of Militant Buddhist Black Metal bands when they did Angkor Vat.

Mediafiring that shit right now.

Mmmh I have the Skuggeheim tape (love it, one of the few recent bands that keeps the old 90's flame alive) and the Vemod tape, which are both excellent. I'm waiting for the Askeregn tape in the mail as well (same dude that is in Vemod and Jammerskrik) and I really want to hear the Astral Winds one (same dude that is in Vemod, Jammerskrik and Askeregn) as it's been sold to me as some Tangerine Dream going kraut while using Fenriz's keyboards... Apparently, Vilains Bonshommes sounds like Joy Division, whom I couldn't care less about (and it's the same dude that is in Vemod, etc...)

More power to me.

Re: Black Metal

That Lascowiec band sounds really great, I need to check them out more... although, 'Asgard mysteries' is a pretty funny name.

Also, not really on the subject of raw/punky bm, I just wanted to post this band from back home called Svartidauði.  They've been going for a while but have yet to release anything beyond the cassette they made two years ago and a 'promo album', whatever that is.  Definite nods to the later French bands.  Here is the promo album on youtube.

Re: Black Metal

yes! solid band...saw them at Kaffistofan in the summer and the sound was kinda sucky but they had this one riff that sounded like pure evil.

...tis all in peeces, all cohaerence gone...

Re: Black Metal

Svartidaudi rules.

The best black metal album ever coming out of Iceland is that one though:

Re: Black Metal

Svartidaudi are either in the process of, or have completed work on (i'm not 100% sure which) their debut album. It's being recorded by the guy from Haus Mundus/Rebirth of Nefast.

I'm pretty sure Terratur Posessions are putting it out at some point next year.

That's excellent news.... but it's also news I have been hearing for a really long time now.

It will happen eventually, though, and when it does, it will be incredible.

Rémi: Very good call on Thule.

Also, here are some young guys from Iceland, Chao, flexing muscles.  This is a demo track from their first album, Vomit Orchestra, which was meant to come out this year but who knows when it'll actually see the light of day.

Re: Black Metal

Really enjoying working my way through some of the stuff in this thread. Thanks guys.

Re: Black Metal

xKollix, Chao is interesting.

KeepScreaming, I received my Askeregn tape yesterday. I listened to it twice so far and I believe it's a grower. I find it very interesting, duder manages to create a great atmosphere through his songs and THOSE VOCALS!! Cool.

Re: Black Metal

never got into black metal, except for that time when i was eight and my brother sharing the same room with me would always play alot of darkthrone and he even went to the extent of making me read that book about one of the guys from mayhem killing himself, that was unbearable as a kid.

but nowadays, im starting open up towards the genre, though not the pure ones, been digging the stuffs from wolves in the throne room and blut aus nord alot.

Still waiting on mine, but i'm very intrigued now. Each one of those Fossbrenna bands seems to be a bit different, so i don't know what to expect.

Anyone been paying attention to the CW Productions label? A real favourite of mine putting out very raw, interesting black metal that doesn't quite sound like anything else out there. Most recordings are very lo-fi, but beneath the rehearsal recordings lies some great black metal.
Cirrhus and Furdidurke are the better know on the label and well worth checking out - punkish black metal with a lot of melody. My favourite so far is a tape by a band called Kestrel and is some of the most excellent/odd stuff going...2 full tracks and 3 short organ interludes, reminds me of that majestic Polish sound in places.

Oh, and i'm enjoying all this Icelandic black metal being posted! I think i should mention this one too - http://www.myspace.com/grimmd

These 3 tracks seeing the light of day soon and i hear more songs are to be recorded this winter.

*ahem* alright Kolli?
