Re: Black Metal

I've recently started a new project called Bloodfalls and its sort of blackened crust, I guess:

It feels weird to write stuff with so much BM influence given that, as I said before, I'm not the biggest BM fan out there save for a few first wave bands and some of the punkier shit, but its a lot of fun to write.  I was the only person involved in that particular track, but I have managed to rope in a second guitarist for future recordings and gigs etc.  Still need a drummer, though.

Also, here's a cool band I just found in the related videos to my song:

As I say, I like the punkier shit.

VIVAT CARNE NOVA!

KeepScreaming, I received my Askeregn tape yesterday. I listened to it twice so far and I believe it's a grower. I find it very interesting, duder manages to create a great atmosphere through his songs and THOSE VOCALS!! Cool.

Still waiting on mine, but i'm very intrigued now. Each one of those Fossbrenna bands seems to be a bit different, so i don't know what to expect.

They're all pretty much have the same members in them though, haha...

Re: Black Metal

CW Prod is a great label and the guy who runs it comes across a total dude. I have a pending order on it's way and I can't wait to finally hear the Kestrel tape (more birds of prey references in metal). Still cannot get into that Cirrhus 7" but I keep revisiting it and Furdidurke are great.

Really looking forward to listening to the Icelandic stuff Kolli posted over christmas, as my knowledge currently runs only to Grimmd (the play count on my ipod of those tracks would be embarressingly high!).

Re: Black Metal

Is this thread dead now? I got a copy of "Frost" and two Skuggeheim 7"es the other day, all of them are ace. What are you guys listening to lately?

Ah thanks for reminding me about Skuggeheim. I wrote him a letter and he has put copies of the 7"s aside so i really need to send the money for them!

Been listening to a lot of Black Cilice recently, the new LP is excellent.

Re: Black Metal

I actually haven't heard Black Cilice. I've been listening to old Ancient, "Panzerfaust" and "Hate Them" mostly lately, haha.

Skuggeheim is nice. I just hate that I'm too OCD to break the seals on the 7"es so I've been mostly listening to the demo :X

Ah yeah i love a bit of old Ancient, Svartalvheim is an overlooked classic in my opinion and the Trolltaar EP is good shit too. I can only really get into the stuff that has Grimm on drums and vocals though, everything after that leaves me cold.
Always liked Gehenna 'First Spell' as well. Some early Norwegian black metal that doesn't get talked about much.

Re: Black Metal

Understandable after making a videoclip such as "Lilith's Embrace"...

And I love early Gehenna too. Actually, "Svartalvheim" makes me think of early Gehenna mixed with early Gorgoroth. Love it.

These 3 tracks seeing the light of day soon and i hear more songs are to be recorded this winter.

*ahem* alright Kolli?

Dude, yes.  Second demo recorded over christmas in snowy mountains.

Also, this band was just brought to my attention... I'm liking it

I'm waiting anxiously for the Owl's Blood tape to arrive in the mail right now. This sample track is really sounding good to me at the moment:

This demo is excellent! Solid, straight forward black metal similar to Vulto and Ostots, which would make sense as they're also from Portugal. Infact i'm pretty sure the guy from Ostots plays drums in Owl's Blood?

Good recommendation dude. I'll get the tape when it comes out, its a shame it only 2 tracks though!

Re: Black Metal

Ostots is actually from the Spanish Basque Country, not Portugal.

The A Side of the third Skuggeheim 7" is absolutely amazing.

I got the "Frost" reissue with the OG vinyl in it and it sounds SO GOOD.

I also received Isvind's reissues and I'm so disappointed. I mean, I love the music on the records but I thought the covers sucked (I want the OG artworks!), no lyric sheet, GZ vinyl that's not powerful. Bummer...

Re: Black Metal

Yes, into Owls Blood. Great name too.

I have the Ostots 7" on Seedstock and really like it, awesome they are Basque, didnt know that. I'll bring it with me this weekend.

Also today I release the new cassette for Veld- noisy and harsh black metal from the US.

I have a rudimentary website here with a lot of work to be done on it: http://zoskiakultus.com/ and as I can't add music to it yet you can check out Veld here on the PRGNT records soundcloud: http://soundcloud.com/prgnt/disease-and-discord

£3 a tape. Email [email protected] . Tapes also available from the band on their US tour with Church Whip/Vomikaust for anyone lucky enough to be able to get to one of the shows!

Re: Black Metal

Darkthrone "Transylvanian Hunger"
Bathory "The Return"
Mayhem "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas"
Burzum "Hvis Lyset Tar Oss"
Emperor "In The Nightside Eclipse"

If you don't get into those, don't bother, really...

heh thought Basque Country was Portugal! Shows how unworldly i am.
Still i think there seems to be a lot of split-sharing between Portuguese and Basque Country bands so that was the root of my assumption.

I would pretty much echo the last 2 posts for essential black metal albums.

Perhaps add Immortal 'Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism' to the list as well.

Sam, I don't know many Basque BM bands at all. Basque people are more into heavy metal and thrash, I think.

I know of one band on the French side: http://www.myspace.com/cylenchar but it's not great.

On the Spanish side, I know about Ostots, Numen: http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Numen/3066, Nakkiga: http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Nakkiga/13491 and Mortinatum: http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Mortinatum/11429 . I like the few things I heard by Mortinatum. Numen sound too cheesy to me most of the time, and I haven't listened to Nakkiga. Sorry I can't help more, I guess there's no proper Basque scene in spite of what Seedstock were saying on their website when they sold the Ostots 7" but I suppose they need to find things to say so they can sell their records...

Dude, saying that the Basque country is in Portugal is like telling a Scot he's Welsh. When foreign bands play in the Spanish Basque country and say "thank you Spain for welcoming us" or something like that, they get boo'ed. Be careful with that wink

And I don't know about Immortal's album. While it's a classic, it didn't create anything special compared to the other albums I mentioned.

Also, I got my laptop's line-in input fixed today so I ripped all three Skuggeheim 7"es for everyone tonight. If you think it sounds weird at times, it's because the dude behind the band recorded it that way. My set-up is great, works fine and all.

Cheers.

Thanks for the skuggeheim rip Remi, just spent a great wet and dark coastal bus ride with them. Going to check out arcanus tenebrae next.

English dudes I have a few copies of the Owls Blood and Mons Veneris/Voltaic Omen tapes coming in so let me know if anyone wants either?

Re: Black Metal

Where would be a good place to start, if I wanted to check out some black metal that was well under the radar?

Re: Black Metal

Black metal has been receiving more attention than ever these last few years so nothing is "well under the radar." There are a billion blogs with links to the most obscure one-man-bands if you want.

I think if you want to hear about "well under the radar" black metal, you need to quit the Internet and start sending out letters to get zines and demos smile
