Topic: Black Metal

No thread, thought I'd start one.

To start off with and just to annoy any purists, the main reason I was looking for one was to ask after things such as Raw Moon, Wode, anything that mixes BM with a bit of punk or similar. Any suggestions?

Re: Black Metal

threads about black metal get so contentious, so I'm looking forward to see how this one turns out

really like that Wode demo. I would say it's more punk than BM

Weakling - Dead As Dreams is pretty mental

fishbone

(sorry couldn't resist...)

you still bore me...

Re: Black Metal

there is a BM thread, but it has contributions from the infamous alexander b so perhaps it's best to start afresh.

Re: Black Metal

I've been listening to Basilisk quite a bit. The vocals sound quite evil. I didn't realise it was an English bloke; I thought they were from some cold forest of Scandinavian frozen pissdeath.

I like music.

Re: Black Metal

chris, you can probably go and get all of this from oli's room.

Raspberry Bulbs
Skvlt
White Medal
Sump
Grinning Death's Head

I really like all of this Black Metal played by hardcore kids too, fuck what the purists say, it's a lot more harsh and angry sounding. Even if it is "trendy".

Re: Black Metal

I don't know much about this stuff, but I love White Medal, Sump, Sutekh Hexen.

and this:

Major Wants : To The Point "mentally checked out' 7"
the Death Dust Extractor 12" & Crisis 7"s at punk prices...
and I do a weird record label http://tadpolerecords.blogspot.co.uk/

Re: Black Metal

Been listening to lots of black metal this autumn. I prefer the more epic (NOT symphonic) flavour though. That Wode demo is rather good indeed. Also Pine Barrens from that neck of the woods obviously.

Other than that I arv been mowstly lissnin to Altar of Plagues, Woe, Woods of Ypres, more recent Agalloch, Wolves in the Throne Room, Gorgoroth, Wodensthrone (are they from Manchester as well?). Still need to check out new WITTR, I hear it's a belter.

Any gigging UK bands worth checking out at the minute? Gutted I missed AoP recently.

Ahh, I had a look but couldn't find one. Sorry Andy!

Some of these recommendations sound great, I'm off to check them out.

Re: Black Metal

S.V.E.S.T 'scarification of soul' demo from France is a stone-cold classic. One of the best THINGS ever, regardless of metal.

Also, go to my room and grab the Volahn and Arizmenda tapes, Chris. You'll love them.

Re: Black Metal

Will bring SKVLT tapes for all this weekend.

Was just listening to that SVEST record yesterday, so good!

Also add HORRID CROSS, CHURCH WHIP and VOLCANIC SLUT to the pile along with Grinning Deaths Head for killer Floridian blackened punk stuff.

Re: Black Metal

Demonaz, Graveland, Blut Aus Nord for me

Re: Black Metal

Which Blut Aus Nord records do you rate in particular?

Re: Black Metal

Wode are very excellent live. No dramatics, just three very un-metal looking guys being awesome.

I've been getting very much into black metal lately (sidestep from obsessions with stuff that sounds like Fingerprint/ Spirit of Versailles I guess)

Blut Aus Nord are incredible. I love how they manage to get lots of godfleshy type influences into their sound. As long as you avoid "Mort" you can't really go wrong. Ultima Thulee is my favourite as it manages to nail both the spooky lovecrafty stuff along with more vicious parts. Both Memoria Vetusta records are great as is The Work which Transforrms God which is so bizzare/ unsettling.

Peste Noir (also french) kinda has a (even better) burzum vibe, Deathspell Omega (Also French) are mining the Blut Aus Nord thing too and the first Alcest record (also french) is amazing. I love later Alcest too, although not remotely black metal.

Re: Black Metal

Have you not seen Wode since Ed Troup joined? They are now a four piece and as with everything Ed puts his hands to they are even better for it.

Also, Sacred Ritual definitely need a mention in this thread.

Yes!

Re: Black Metal

also good are Make A Change . . . Kill Yourself

Re: Black Metal

I only really like a handful of BM bands and they are all really obvious (Emperor, Darkthrone, Mayhem etc.) but I tend to really love bands that were influenced by or were an influence on black metal such as Venom, Sodom, Gallhammer, Iskra etc. so I feel almost obligated to get into more Black Metal.  The problem is that I only really like the punky first wave stuff and, as far as I can tell, that's in a fairly limited supply.

Much better than Leviathan in my opinion.

A lot of the stuff coming out of Ukraine and Russia in recent years has been pretty great.  Drudkh and Walknut in particular.

Re: Black Metal

Any good suggestions for "atmospheric" BM encouraged! I'm enjoying Summoning/Urfaust/Cold World etc a fair bit lately
