Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

Wipers - The Circle. I rarely venture into post-LOTL Wipers, but sometimes I like to visit the late 80s/early 90s echo-drenched products of Greg Sage's warped musical palate, records that seem to suit 2am listening sessions. This is one of the better efforts from the period I reckon, with some lovely moments. Nothing on the early records obviously, but still. So hazy.

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

Ampere - Like shadows

Really really liking it, can't believe I missed this until now. It's Ampere, we all know them, a bit pointless trying to explain.

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

zola jesus - stridulum ep, particularly 'night'.  this is really strong. there aren't many other albums/ep's/pieces of music that instantly link me to such an exact point in my life.  this was the soundtrack to meeting somebody totally (temporarily) perfect after somebody that was not, and hadnt been for quite a while.  its also a reminder of cycling miles & miles in the dark

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

Lago Morto - Obitorio Veneto

It's basically a band created by Nico Vascellari (the artist that did that split thing with Prurient), with members of A Flower Kollapsed and With Love, as a piece of performance art. They played 15 shows, 14 of which in their hometown of Vittorio Veneto in all sorts of places and one in Graz at the gallery where the visuals of the project were shown. The recordings are raw as fuck but it sounds a lot like old 1980s Italian hardcore mixed with stuff like La Piovra. Really cool stuff!

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

Потоп - Канали

Macedonian Sludge, found it in the record exchange in Camden yesterday, didn't know much about them other than hearing a short song on the Freak Power comp, I'm digging it.

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

Out Cold - two broken hearts are better than one

the best modern 'fast' hardcore band?

Potop are wicked.

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

Jóhann Jóhannsson - The Miners' Hymns
Apparently its a soundtrack for a documentary. Not seen that but I really love this. It's quite mournful and dark. Then the last track is kinda like coming out of a tunnel into daylight. Amazing stuff.

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

A mix of early Kate Bush stuff.

heard lots of this when I was a kid and it's amazingly nostalgic.  it's also overwhelmingly neo-folk.  Although without some of the "abstract" politics that sometimes come with that.

Dino Valente - Dino

This record is kind of like a cross between Skip Spence's "Oar" lp, Johnny Pace/Johnny Mathis style crooning and lyrical content that make about as much sense as Tommy Hall's 13th Floors stuff. Dino was in Quicksilver Messenger Service when they were doing the pop stuff, which is weird because this record is way out there. Anyway, this guy was a great songwriter (including the best track on the Karen Dalton lp I mention earlier in this thread) and he really lets it sprawl out on this one.

I'm not into that.

Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band - Lick My Decals Off Baby

A more portable, user friendly take on the Trout Mask sound with added guitar & marimba duets. This record is sick with CONFIDENCE and is perfect morning listening when you've got a bunch of stuff you need to achieve that day. And so on it goes.

Unbelievable. And very brave.

Cee-Lo Green - The Lady Killer (2010)

I feel like Cee-Lo gets a bad hype because of his visibility in the pop charts these last two years. Its lesser known that he's been making music since the early 90s since he was in Goodie Mobb. In fact, there's a school of thought that holds Soul Food as one of the best rap albums of the 90s. I think the story goes that the other members wouldn't let Cee-Lo sing in Goodie Mobb. He roved out on his own eventually and this is his third (I think) solo full length. Its arguably a bit shallow and one-dimensional: almost every song is a (pop) hit. However, the two or three tracks that betray the archetype are positioned well enough to break up the record and make it listenable as a whole. There's a lot of good songs on this.

Belgrado s/t LP - Hate the font used on the cover. Definitely a grower, but ultimately as good as everyone says.

Agreed, probably their best record of that period (and thus maybe their best record overall?)

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

Now listening to an FNU Ronnies 7" I was gonna sell, turns out it's a keeper after a re-listen...not up to the quality of the 12" but still. Weirdly reminds me of Human Eye in parts

I was listening to "Safe As Milk" yesterday for the first time in years - and man does that record rule. Not to detract the tiniest bit from the more experimental stuff, not that "Safe As Milk" plays it straight by any means either, but it's such a great rock'n'roll record full stop.

But - speaking of music for work - listening to Trans Am's latest ("The Thing") - it's a shame fashions move on as I feel that the latest 2-3 albums are just as good as "Futureworld" or "The Red Line" but they might not get the attention they would have in their "post rock" late 90s peak...almost like from the ironic hodge podge of sounds that were being attempted they've come into their own fully functioning cock rock/Kraftwerk/Neuromancer thing. Anyway - great album to work to (apart from a few bits of zealous panning - not so great for concentration).

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

Yep love Safe As Milk, Zig Zag Wanderer is one of my favourite songs ever. That fucking stompy bass break...

Not technically listening to 'RIGHT NOW', but had on IMPACT Solo Odio on my way to work. Such an energetic record and a fav of that period of Italian hardcore... I also think PI ripped off one of the intros.

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

Now: BOB SEGER SYSTEM - Ramblin Gamblin Man LP. Killer B-side, the highlight obviously being 2+2. Love Hendrix-infused 'hard rock' when it's this good

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

I've overexposed myself to Safe As Milk because for the longest time it was the only Beefheart record I really liked. Still a great record, seldom listened to now.

Dead C - Secret Earth

Four elongated tracks that take on the fixed repertoire sound of the late 80's/early 90's. 'Plains' is the kind of murky slo-mo sonic immolation that makes me love this band to the point of typing stuff like "murky slo-mo sonic immolation". Even sounds like they chucked some sleighbells in for good measure. Subsequent album Patience persists in totally not doing anything for me, so I hope they’ve got another one of these in them.

The cover just basically makes me want to move to New Zealand tonight.

Unbelievable. And very brave.

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

Lunch-break listening:

LEFT INSANE - Tool Box LP. A band I've only recently gotten into thanks to bandmates. Great record and a cheap buy (can get sealed copies from plenty of Euro sellers). Late FLAG is the most obvious reference point, a little bit like VIRULENCE but probably better. Best record on Nemesis.

you reckon??? its too frumpy sounding to me. Nemesis has plenty of variety so unless you have their entire discography.... (in which case I'm robbing your house)

Oddly enough I was listening to rips of the Hunger Farm 7inches before my battery died in the cold.

you still bore me...

122

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

Hmm I was looking at the Nemesis discography last night, I've owned bits and bobs over the years but none of it stands up for me now (infact I think Left Insane is the only thing I have left, after finally shifting Haywire/Visual D/Against The Wall etc records). Third rate youth crew for the most part. Can't stand Insted etc. A few of the bands have a glimmer of interest, but I wouldn't put them on by choice generally...

But it's all 'personal taste', one man's frumpy is another man's bounty! Left Insane stick out like a sore thumb on the label to me, but perhaps some of the bands I've never heard (i.e. Smile, Chicano-Christ, Bzrker etc) are decent too? Perhaps not my cup of tea

123

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

true dat.
except when theres power pop like Reason to Believe sat next to XchorusX you know Mr and Mrs Nemesis had great taste and variety. They certainly got one of the raddest logo's for a label.

for me they provided the soundtrack of plenty of skate vids of my salad days, then teenage sXe angst, and continue to provide whatever the doctor ordered be it point blank or one step ahead. Good Shit.

you still bore me...

Thou - Tyrant

Its a nice listen but something stops me from digging it as much as my pals who recommended it do. Dunno what. What music you enjoy seems to go in phases so I'll come back to it in a few months maybe...

Its a nice listen. To my ear its like post-Pure Holocaust Immortal party/stadium metal shiiit. Digging it though.
