Topic: "Post-hardcore" bands that aren't quite post-hardcore - genre name?

I just joined this forum and haven't gotten to know it properly yet, but undoubtedly there are people here that agree with me that newer bands like Alexisonfire, Glassjaw, The Fall Of Troy, FBTMoF, Thursday, etc. aren't "really" post-hardcore. I like them, but I don't like calling them by a genre they don't really fit into (and I have this weird need to categorize everything in iTunes by genre, so..).
People I know use the terms 'modern post-hardcore' and 'post-post-hardcore', but what other genre names would you suggest (that aren't borderline insulting, like 'mallcore' and 'scenecore')?

I'm currently sorting bands by 'post-post-hardcore', but it sounds rediculous and I'm looking for other names.

mtvmo

Re: "Post-hardcore" bands that aren't quite post-hardcore - genre name?

I think we're veering off into the territory of "alternative rock"

There is no such thing as post-hardcore. The library of congress says so.

Re: "Post-hardcore" bands that aren't quite post-hardcore - genre name?

Because 'mtvmo' isn't borderline insulting (and those bands are about as emo as MCR). I thought this forum was mainly used by people that actually knew their genres, not just a bunch of dicks with way too much time on their hands.

Re: "Post-hardcore" bands that aren't quite post-hardcore - genre name?

How about post-mtvmo?

that is exactly what this forum is, not sure anybody would dispute that.

marking crappy bands like these as mtvmo actually saves a lot of time..

The thing is, most people on here are older and so didn't get into the bands you listed as their introduction to emo/hardcore, and therefore we don't know much about them other than the way they are portrayed on tv or something. Have a scan through the reviews or other threads and you will get a picture for the stuff that people here do know about.

Re: "Post-hardcore" bands that aren't quite post-hardcore - genre name?

Ive got a couple of Alexisonfire and Glassjaw albums and enjoy them from time to time.

They are both definitely mtvmo.

It is. That's why people are taking the cunt out of you for liking MTVmo pish.

Re: "Post-hardcore" bands that aren't quite post-hardcore - genre name?

different worlds, like asking somone raised on sweeney's men about mumford and sons. vaguely remember some of those bands being mentioned on post-converge evr mail outs which is def when they started going after that industry crossover dollar, i guess it's quietly accepted that they were gateway groups for maybe some people on here so yeah, i guess 'alternative rock' is about as diplomatic as you can hope for

looking back now though despite them being a band that apparently had genuine older hc roots, glassjaw were always completley ridiculous overought woman-hating gobshites, what were people thinking?

Re: "Post-hardcore" bands that aren't quite post-hardcore - genre name?

I think I remember describing Thursday mainly as Fashioncore at the time.

Re: "Post-hardcore" bands that aren't quite post-hardcore - genre name?

yeah, seem to recall someone describing that swoopy hairstyle that was big back then as a 'geoff/jeff', apparently in honour of thursday's singer

Re: "Post-hardcore" bands that aren't quite post-hardcore - genre name?

I like Alexisonfire quite alot (or at least upto Young Cardinals). I think I'd just call them Post-Hardcore/Alt Rock.

But like everyone's said, this is a DIY elitist little nest of jaded bitterness, so I'm afraid MTVmo is a possible label you'll receive. Call them what you like, as long as you enjoy the music, the label doesn't overly matter.

Jaded bitterness? This site is all about being excited about new music. A few grumpy fuckers in the forum are not the representatives, thank you very much!

A few?!

Not that you're not all lovely people!

Re: "Post-hardcore" bands that aren't quite post-hardcore - genre name?

i would be interested to know what bands the OP listens to that he would say are post-hardcore, just out of scientific curiosity

Erm, is it just me or are memo's posts by a highly sophisticated spambot that places ads for iphones in certain words (look at "agree" in the initial post)

Kunal might still be onto something though - the whole thread might be a ruse to ensure iTunes and iTunes genre-ordering is in our consciousness...
