I like the way you put Koyla in newer, a record which is 15 years old, older than some kids at JT SOAR.

Miri, we are oldmo now.

serious answer: get me drunk and I'll make you a tape of frustratingly hard to track down, yet amazing, music.

Start with the first generation classicz and move onto the mid 90s stuff:

Rites of Spring - End on End
Embrace - s/t
Ignition - Completed Services
Gray Matter - Food For Thought
Three - s/t
Rain - La Vich Qui Rit
Moss Icon - Discography
Hated - Discography (download. no official re-issue)

I calculated that the distance between us first hearing Indian Summer and it's release is now more than half the distance between some-mo we consider "contemporary" and that the distance between Moss Icon and that is almost the same. Try it, will make you want to throw up.

Old peoples emo home awaits

I expect you will be presenting your work on this at FAAM2 in between bands

Re: Recommend Me Some Solid Emo Albums

v surprised to see no links to http://www.fourfa.com/
is that kerrang introduction still available?

hoover - lurid traversal of route 7
would be the only thing missing off this page

indian summer, shotmaker, yaphet kotto - probably my 3 favourites

Re: Recommend Me Some Solid Emo Albums

Was gonna mention Hoover but they quintessentially define post-hardcore with all the dub vibes but man, some of their jams dig deep.... a ton of Hoover/June of 44 offshoot bands then too. The Great Unraveling...

Re: Recommend Me Some Solid Emo Albums

Gonna throw 'Outnumbered Is Outflanked' by Calvary in just for lolz lul. Bit more 'post-punk' than Current were, but that record is a fucking BANGER. Also, 'Anachronous' By Tubers is wikkid & so is 'No Difference' by Daniel Striped Tiger.

Putting the chat amongst the pigeons.

I'll say.

Given how long it seems to take me to get into emo albums that list will last my entire middle age.

Re: Recommend Me Some Solid Emo Albums

I'd recommend kicking off with the '90s rather than 1st gen 80s bands.

These are the three I'd suggest starting with too...stuff that it's impossible to dislike if yr into emo. Plus Christie Front Drive 'Stereo' for the more melodic angle, and the Bullets In 12" for something more like straight ahead hardcore.

We're going to party, karamu, fiesta, forever.

Re: Recommend Me Some Solid Emo Albums

Don't think this was mentioned? Granted, not the entire album is solid but when you a band writes a song as emo as this it kind of makes the bad songs bearable:

Re: Recommend Me Some Solid Emo Albums

First time listening to that Julia song in about a decade and was distressed to find the first chords reminded me immediately of RHCP "Scar Tissue"...Ouch!

But yeh, that aside, good song!

Re: Recommend Me Some Solid Emo Albums

Here's a band that I have always thought was great from that era, though not sure if others consider this emo?. Love this tune and LP:

edit: adding link for entire 1998 LP

I will never now be able to unhear that! You can take solace in that it's RHCP's least worst song.

This list is brilliant, thanks people. I've copied it all into a doc - "emo middle age." haven't listened to everything yet but Bird Calls and Sleepytime Trio stand out so far. Will fully investigate the triumvirate of Indian Summer, Shotmaker, and Yaphet Kotto.

After this my YouTube went to I have Dreams - In God Hands. The caption underneath reads "I believe in a special bond between two friends, and I try to think where we would have been, if not with each other, then where? Then where? But now we are growing up. Some feelings are growing out, but how could I forget those days? I can't forget. No, please don't take it the wrong way. We might not see each other every day but know you're in my heart, and I hope you feel the same way too. Tell me, how could I forget the impact that we had on each others' lives? I can't forget. I can't forget you, my friend. In good hands we have grown together and in good hands we have changed together, but the caring is still there. How could I possibly forget those days that we shared? They will never be shared with anyone else."

Honestly, my gran has fridge magnets with more grit than that.
