Demon System 13 - Code 13 - split - 7

Labels: Havoc
Review by: Andy Malcolm

That was clever. 13 songs on this record, and each band does 6 ½. DS 13 starts the last song on side A, Code 13 finishes it at the start of side B. Cute.

OK, everyone knows about DS13 by now surely. Fast arsed Swedish hardcore heroes who play their pretty basic hardcore thrash very quickly, and extremely adeptly. It’s all about playing Minor Threat style songs at a few notches faster, and giving everyone opportunity to run around in circles and point fingers and sing a long. How can you resist lines such as: “œI’M A COP! (backing vocals: “œI LIE! I LIE!”) I’M A COP! (bv: “œI CHEAT! I CHEAT!)”. And it’s all very fun and catchy. It makes me bob my head fast and tap my toe and it’s excellent. The same can’t be said for the album, which is boring. But in this short burst over one side of orange vinyl, it is entirely palatable, although most of the songs sound the same. Formula: play drums fast, play very basic riff, shout vocals, shout backing vocals, yell “œFUKK!” a lot. The one time they do something different is on their half of the split song, “œWorldwide Hardcore Pride” where they just go nuts and out of control for a while, “˜woundedveteran stylee.

Code 13 on the other hand are kind of boring. They play hardcore thrash too, but DS13 rather show them up. C13 play very fast but without the character and fun of DS. I don’t know, they are very similar in style but DS blows them away for some reason. Freshness? I have no idea. Whatever. C13 also has a guitar solo. Yeah.

Thrash and burn!
