A horrible hack

The latest in a long line of chancers from New York, flashing their hip chops in our anaemic anglo faces. Well, Avey Tare and Panda Bear aren't riding on mere location. They have a magick here that goes way beyond any lame Black Dice noodling. Pop ethic - check, Sun City Girls abstraction - check, psychedelic spazz outs - check. Like Coil or Current 93, this ain't just new musick, its like stumbling upon a new tribe with its own language and sense of dress. This double CD (compiling the Collective's first two albums) whips the hind legs off their "new" album out on Fat Cat, "Here Comes The Indian", concentrating far more on the warping of pop convention and less on mere noise. Maybe Flaming Lips, meets Danielson Famile with a touch of that nu-Americana shit (The No Necks Blues Band, Pelt etc ) will give ya an inkling. Of the two albums "They're Gone . . . . " is the pick, and I hearby nominate it for the next Mercury Prize, just to be pipped by the new Stereophonics or Manics album.
