I don't know anything about the Asexuals really. I get the feeling that they are one of those old bands that people are supposed to get into. Of course (like most stuff) when I first got into punk-rock I completely bypassed a lot of the old stuff. Anyways, now I get to hear some Asexuals. First of all, this is a sort of "best of" I suppose, with the first 7 tracks taken off of very early 7 inches, and the rest of the 24 songs are cuts from various LP's. It makes for a nice compilation, and you can also hear the bands sound evolve as the CD goes on.

The early songs are very rough sounding, thrashy punk rock. That classic mid 80's sound I guess. Distorted simple guitars & snotty vocals. Think early Lemonheads / Screeching Weasel type thing. I suppose that's because the Asexuals would have influenced both those bands. But the later tracks (the songs taken from the later LP's) are much more melodic sounding. A lot more mainstream actually. Really pop. You would not believe how the sound has changed by the time you get to track 12 "Borderline" and this sounds really great melodic punk-rock.

I'm sure a lot of the purists will shoot me, but I like the later stuff more. Melodic guitars & poppy vocals this is pretty good sounding. But overall I don't know what to make of the Asexuals. I like some of the songs, but I don't think this band is really me. But I'm sure that some of the diehard fans will want this for the early 7 inches and the unreleased track.
