Rothko were one of those bands that I had heard loads and loads about for ages but hadn't actually got round to hearing. I finally saw them live with Tristeza recently and I was really impressed with how lovely and interesting they are musically. Rothko consist of three bass guitars and nothing else, which sounds a little strange and dull on paper but on a circular peice of black wax the result is really quite special. First side '291' was the best song they played when I saw them live. Very melodic and atmospheric, and it almost brings a tear to my eye dare I say it! Second side 'St Seno' isn't as good as '291' but is still great, following in a similar style. Both these songs are a lot less effects based as a lot of the stuff on their new e.p on Bella Union (also excellent) which makes for a more stripped down sound. Great 7", if you think this will appeal to you then buy.
