This band comes to us by way of a sad route. Big Business features a guy called Jared, one of the founding members of the excellent Karp, who together with drummer Scott Jernigan, did big, mean, Melvins-styled rock. When that stopped, they both went on to do The Whip with Joe Preston, shortly before their sure-to-be-glittering career was cut tragically short by Scott’s accidental death in a boating accident. So here we are: Jared on bass and vocals, and a new guy called Casey drumming. Now we’re up to speed.

The absence of guitars is the most obvious aspect this time round, but fear not! Any potential accusations of deliberate arty wankiness are hurled quite comprehensively out the door once the first few moments of farty and furious rocking get going. There’s always been a slightly ridiculous edge to the stuff that Jared is involved with, but with propulsive and complex riffs like these, moving you bodily with a filthy groove a mile wide, you can’t help but love every second of it.

Sometimes you do get the feeling that you’re listening to Karp through your neighbour’s wall, but since when is that ever a bad thing? I wish my neighbours listened to Karp. This is unbelievably good.
