Heck, neither the kind words of others nor their more-than-sturdy slot opening for Hoover could prepare me for the impossibly jubilant nature of this little platter, making my chance meeting with This Ain’t Vegas all the sweeter. “Escape” rallies indie pop sensibilities alongside the tersely eloquent post-punk hip thrusts of Gang of Four, snaking wiry guitar lines through soulful hollers and jutting, funky rhythms that snap and pop like a contortionist limbering up for the show of his life. “Onlookers Surround” on the b-side is slightly more reserved, ducking and weaving where it’s big brother on the flip had gone straight in for the punch. It simmers along with overlapping vocals and sharp arpeggios dangling themselves from the edge of a handful of neat hooks, priming you for another bout before the needle has even had chance to lift, snappily rounding off a fine pair of songs that are truly a joy to behold.
