Difficult to know exactly what to think. The Matt Sweeney band kicks off on stuff like "I See a Darkness", "Death To Everyone" but almost spoils the crepuscular brilliance of "A Sucker's Evening". Don't get me wrong, it's good Oldham fare, but definitely a Bonnie "Prince" Billy production rather than a monumental Palace cut. Rather than it being a case of an over-enthusiastic band ruining great songs this lp could be a case of overcooking an aesthetic that should remain more defiantly half-baked. However, as an all too rare live document and an intersting look at what really, truly constitues *anti-folk* this is worth having. Maybe he should just get a guitarist who spends less time with Slaphead Corgan.
