Blutch (NOT Clutch!) are from Belgium, have done a number of records and have toured with several notable Stateside doom and stoner bands whenever they deign to come over this side of the Atlantic. Blutch's music however is a remarkably different approach to the genre that is far from traditional or obvious. Melodies snake in and out of existence, with the band's power coming from what they hold back rather than what they unleash at choice moments. "Matera" has a harrowing, depressing atmosphere to it, like prime Harvey Milk, with intriguing riffing, clever atmospherics, droning pasages and blinding repetition all to the fore. This is a really fine album by a band who have clearly found their own sound and are pummelling it into submission.
