With their zero-bullshit, 110%-negative, totally metallic hardcore onslaught, Frightener are too fun to be truly frightening. They're one-dimensional almost to the point of becoming a, er, point, all pure slabs of riff, hyperactive drums and the most hateful vocals this side of the black metal divide, so while even this relatively short album is frankly too much to take in one sitting (possibly because I'm a wussy), there's no denying that songs like "Legion" and "Acheron" will stick in my head for a long, long time. If I ever start pumping iron, I'll stick this on my headphones. The CD version has just been released by Chainsaw Safety.
