This trio from Finland really kick it man! I know every man and his dog is on a noise-rock tip at the moment, but Baxter Stockman have been banging away at their instruments for time now and really seem to know when to rein it in and when to give you a slapping like the sore-looking arse on the cover seems to have gone through. A-side “Romance” has a compulsive swagger to it that gets you moving with its relentless, drunken rhythm. Yelled vocals break down to guttural exhortations that make what was already pretty sleazy into something positively filthy. “Kar-Air” on the flip is a meaner, moodier proposition with the rhythm section locking it down while the guitar wails and washes over the verse, then it properly busts loose. “Romance” is the winner here though. I wonder how forthcoming LP “Punter” will maintain that sleazy, rocking atmosphere for its duration, but I and the handful of other interested bearded loners eagerly await the outcome.
