Amalthea are new to me although they have been kicking around for a good while now. There is a review on this website of a 7inch that was released in 2005. They come from Sweden and are either named after Jupiter's 3rd moon or a nymph from Greek mythology after who that moon was named. This is a one-sided record with a song called "The Fall" on one side, and the band's logo silk-screen printed on the other. The one track kicks off with some lightly sung vocals and guitar sounds which are firmly in post rock territory. It's quite a clean sound too - nice and melancholy. As the track develops you can feel the underlying menace rising up. It gets heavier as the guitars are cranked up and the vocals get much harsher and more aggressive before another drifting instrumental part brings the song to its conclusion. This track sees them focussing more on the post rock than the screamo that I had initially expected would be the order of the day here but the band do well in mixing these styles and the contrasting melodic and heavier moments. This is a taster for their forthcoming album so keep an eye out for that too if you are into this.
