A horrible hack

My patience for one-sided 12"s (particularly those that spin at 45) has never been high, but right now it's at an all-time low: the space my records consume is beginning to be something that I genuinely hate, and US postage prices mean every purchase needs to go through some sort of mental fucking Star Chamber to warrant consideration. Kudos, then, to Tallahassee's Protocol, whose record I knew I needed after just a cursory internet playthrough. The premise is simple enough – harsh, ugly hardcore flavoured by the likes of Negative FX, Ripcord and No Comment – but it's delivered with such an unstoppable sense of violence that it takes your breath away. The electronic moments threading the five songs together are a nice touch, offsetting the bonesaw treble of the guitars and the bilious vocals that reach a bitter nadir with the final abhorrent mutterings of the record's standout closing track.
